Hunger and the Insensitivity of Mr. President

I watched with deep concern the statement made by President Bola Tinubu to the Catholic Bishops who visited his office, that there has always been hunger in Nigeria, even before he was born.

While it is true that hunger has been a part of human life and has existed in our country for decades, such a statement appears insensitive to the plight of the millions of Nigerians who face worsening economic hardship today. More importantly, we must focus on the facts and the measurable outcomes of governance.

Before the present administration assumed office in 2023, an estimated 17 million Nigerians were facing acute food insecurity, primarily caused by insecurity, armed conflict, widespread banditry, and devastating floods. Today, less than three years later, that number has risen to about 35 million Nigerians. Instead of improving the situation, the crisis has worsened significantly under the current administration.

The same trend is evident in poverty. Before this government took office in 2023, Nigeria’s extreme poverty was estimated at 87 million people. Current projections suggest that this number is approaching 140 million people, making Nigeria home to the largest population of people living in extreme poverty anywhere in the world.

No one disputes that this administration inherited serious challenges. However, leadership is measured not by the challenges inherited but by the results achieved. The government must honestly acknowledge that its response has fallen far short of what the situation demanded, with millions more Nigerians pushed deeper into poverty and hunger.

The combination of persistent insecurity, poor economic management, fiscal indiscipline, wasteful public expenditure, and inadequate investment in productive sectors has compounded the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

A responsible government must prioritise investment in education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and small businesses while pursuing policies that create jobs, expand production, and lift people out of poverty. That remains my commitment to the Nigerian people.

Whenever Peter Obi is in the media, before the press, or on social media, he talks mainly about current national issues bedevilling the nation, and how to rescue Nigeria. But whenever members of the ruling APC or other opposition parties are in the media, they often talk more about Peter Obi, without recourse to current issues affecting Nigeria as a nation.
So again i ask, Who is really incharge of this nation? Why on earth will the APC government in power and all strong opposition parties in Nigeria take on one man as their common threat and common enemy. A man who is also in the opposition. A man whom they claimed came 3rd in the 2023 presidential election. Why the coordinated attacks against him?
There must be something special about Peter Obi that they are seeing, that is scaring the shit out of their lives. Something unique that will reset Nigeria and return it back to her past glory, which they don't want to happen because it will be a goodbye to their wealth without enterprise. Unnecessary wastages, lootings, stealing, and their century old structures of criminality.

Fellow Nigerians, whenever a group or groups of persons start attacking one man without showing any evidence of his wrong doing, know that it is because of envy, hatred, fear of his personality, capability, and integrity.

Such a man is the man for the job. Bad people are always scared of things they stand to lose if good people come to power. So they can do anything including blackmail to scuttle that.

I have someone who just became a doctor.

She’s an inspiration to me. She started 100 level in Microbiology over a decade ago.

She completed her bachelors degree in MCB. She served, and then went back to uni to start Medicine.

Nobody could convince her out of her dreams. She wanted to be a doctor and she was gonna go for it.

She lost one of her parents on the way, I remember I had to do some comforting, it was a tough time. She struggled so much with finance, stress, pressure, anxiety of not doing well (medical students will know this), she struggled with lots of things…

“Hey Yasky I’m scared of this exam”
,I heard/read that regularly for years😅. Earlier in her 200 or 300 level, I use to bother…but later I stopped bothering because I know she’ll pass, maybe she just has to say that to someone first😅. I always listened and reassured her that she’ll pass. I also encourage her in my little ways just to give her ginger.

Anyways, she’s a doctor now and I’m so proud of how far she’s come. I hope all the years spend will be worth it for her.

Esteemed citizens of Nigeria,

It is with deep humility that I accept the role of presidential candidate for our party.
I express my profound gratitude to the leaders of our party. His Excellency Seriake Dickson, the National Chairman, National Secretary and the National Working Committee, NWC members and members of our relentless supporters, and the Nigerian populace who have steadfastly kept the spirit of hope alive. I commend those who have made the journey from every region of our nation to convene here in Abuja.

I wish to assert unequivocally: a New Nigeria is Possible. This conviction has united us; it must serve as our compass on the challenging road ahead and sustain us through all trials we may face. This pivotal moment transcends the individual ambitions of Peter Obi; it concerns the essence of our nation and the future of our children. It is about rekindling hope for millions who have faced adversity yet remain committed to Nigeria.

Today, our nation finds itself at a crucial juncture, enveloped in uncertainty. Families are anxious about their safety; parents are concerned for their children's futures; and talented youth increasingly question their prospects in their homeland.

Businesses are struggling, communities are suffering, and an alarming number of citizens have lost faith in the very concept of governance. Yet, I stand before you filled with optimism and strong faith in the resilience of our people, for I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is possible.

UNITY
To realise this New Nigeria, we must first mend the foundational elements essential for the success of any nation.

Nigeria cannot advance while fragmented by ethnic, religious, regional, or narrow political divides. We may communicate in different languages and practise diverse faiths, but we share a singular destiny under one flag. Our diversity should not be a source of division; rather, it is among our greatest strengths.

We should build bridges where others erect barriers, replace mistrust with confidence, division with understanding, and resentment with a collective purpose. A united Nigeria is indispensable. As Will Durant wisely pointed out, "A great civilisation is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." We must never self-destruct. We must heal, unify, and progress together.

INSECURITY
In terms of security, the situation in Nigeria has considerably worsened. The global terrorism impact assessments ranked Nigeria as the 8th most affected nation in 2022, 6th in 2024, and 4th in 2026.
Yet, for many years, Nigeria garnered global recognition as a reliable contributor to peacekeeping, regional stabilisation, and conflict resolution. Our troops have not only displayed bravery but have also shown professionalism, discipline, resilience, and empathy in the most challenging operational contexts. Our officers and personnel have successfully commanded multiple international forthe ces, safeguarded vulnerable civilian populations, monitored ceasefires, reinstated constitutional order, and contributed to rebuilding efforts.

Nigeria became one of the leading contributors of troops from Africa to UN peacekeeping missions and earned widespread admiration for operational effectiveness and leadership in various countries, including Rwanda, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Western Sahara, Congo, Lebanon, Cambodia, Haiti, and Kuwait. At one pointin a Nigeria, Lt. General Isaac Obiakor (rtd) even led global peacekeeping initiatives.

We must address insecurity with resolve and urgency, for no nation can thrive while its citizens live in trepidation. The primary responsibility of the government is to ensure the safeguarding of lives and property.

As a photographer, I have learned that the most powerful people are often those who understand people, culture and history beyond the camera moments. Being part of Peter Obi’s envoy to South Africa gave me the opportunity to witness that firsthand.

Listening to him speak about his long-standing relationship with South Africa, from his early business engagements with South African Breweries, to witnessing Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, and living in the same neighborhood at the time with Mandela, showed a man who genuinely understands the importance of relationships, diplomacy and African unity.

What stood out the most was his belief in what Africa can become if we begin to work together intentionally as one continent. I do not also like get rich quick schemes so i will not throw money on ads and sign Celebrities and influencers to do ads just to skip the process.

I am ALWAYS looking for ways to do more with less. Yes the money is there but how else can we achieve this without wasting so much money?. Why pay Sydney Talker 20 million for one ad when I have an Ai content creator that can give me 40-50 Ai videos with N2m?.

We will gradually build up a very solid foundation for the Neo Brand one customer at a time and I of all people understand that great things take time.

Today, Nigeria is in decline, battling serious insecurity, food insecurity, unemployment, a weakened naira, declining industrial productivity, and worsening poverty.
At a time when millions of Nigerians struggle daily to afford food and survive economic hardship, every kobo spent on foreign trips must produce tangible national value: investments, factories, jobs, exports, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.

Nigeria needs leadership that is focused less on optics and more on productivity; less on ceremony and more on measurable economic results.
