The loss of at least 45 lives in the Dhaka fire tragedy is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the affected families, and thoughts and prayers for everyone who has lost loved ones or had their lives turned upside down.

With fires becoming more frequent in Bangladesh, attributed to inadequate public safety measures and corruption-ridden regulatory violations, there is a unanimous call for conducting thorough investigations by a competent and credible team.

The precious lives of the Bangladeshi people cannot continue to be lost this way, and these tragic incidents must be prevented through robust protocols, public accountability, and good governance.

Today marks the 88th anniversary of the birth of President Ziaur Rahman, a paragon of leadership and valor whose legacy intertwines with the narrative of Bangladesh itself.

Ziaur Rahman, the soldier, emerged as a hero during the Liberation War of 1971, displaying unwavering bravery and commitment to the nation's cause by proclaiming independence and fighting the war on the frontline. When there was no one else, he was there to take up the cause of Bangladesh in his name. His remarkable contributions on the battlefield played a pivotal role in securing Bangladesh's independence, earning him the respect and admiration of the nation.

As the elected President, Ziaur Rahman steered the nation towards stability and economic prosperity. He implemented crucial policies that fueled economic growth, bringing about the development and nurturing of various sectors, especially the garments and remittance sectors, which continue to be the backbone of the Bangladeshi economy. His government’s policies ensured food security, reduced corruption, and opened new avenues of exports.

Recognising the importance of liberal values, he championed the introduction of multi-party democracy back to Bangladesh. His visionary leadership not only shaped the post-war trajectory of Bangladesh but also left a lasting legacy, marking him as the indispensable figure in our nation's history.

The so-called election without genuine voters, against the will and interest of pro-democracy Bangladeshis, renders the Sheikh Hasina regime as illegal, illegitimate, and unconstitutional. It is an ill-conceived effort to transform the nation into a one-party state, eroding voting rights and fundamental freedoms, and aligning against the democratic world.

Regardless of what transpires on 7 January, this Awami League government remains illegal and illegitimate.

As the main opposition unifying the nation, BNP is dedicated to restoring the power that was and continues to be unjustly taken away, but rightfully belongs to the people of Bangladesh. We pledge to align economically and strategically with democratic nations and institutions, and implement domestic policies and initiatives to empower all Bangladeshis with freedom, equality and justice. Towards that goal, and with the support of the international community – the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh aim to ensure Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and establish a neutral, non-party election-time government – paving the way for a real election, the election that’ll truly reflect the will of a hundred and twenty million voters.
