Death at Thabo Bester’s former prison sparks murder probe

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is closely monitoring operations at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein following the death of inmate Mpho Mkhumbeni, who allegedly died after being assaulted by prison staff.

Mkhumbeni passed away last month, and while his family was initially told he had suffered an asthma attack, a post-mortem revealed the cause of death as complications from pepper spray exposure and blunt force trauma. The department has since confirmed that his death was not natural, but rather a case of murder.

The Mangaung Correctional Centre, which has come under intense scrutiny in recent years, is the same facility from which convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escaped in 2022. The prison, formerly operated by private security firm G4S, has faced widespread criticism over its handling of security and inmate welfare.

The DCS says it remains committed to ensuring accountability and transparency as investigations into Mkhumbeni’s death continue.

Royal AM’s PSL membership terminated over tax debt

Royal AM’s membership with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has been officially terminated, following a vote by PSL clubs at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The decision comes after the club failed to participate in matches since December 2024, following an unresolved R40 million tax debt owed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), which is tied to the club's owner, Shauwn Mkhize, and her family trust.

The debt led to the appointment of a curator to manage the club’s affairs, ultimately triggering the termination of its PSL membership. As a result, all points earned by or against Royal AM this season have been nullified, significantly altering the Betway Premiership standings.

The nullification of points has had a direct impact on the league’s rankings, pushing the team currently in 15th place into the relegation/promotion play-offs. With 28 matches remaining in the season, the decision marks a dramatic shift in the fight for survival and promotion in South Africa’s top-flight football league.
