I think the Vinicius Jr. 'saga' aptly proves that transfer stories can get totally overinflated by a couple of 'perceived reliable' voices saying what fans want to hear and running with it, even when said voices had already demonstrated a track record of at best bending the truth, at worst being completely wrong this summer.
It was telling that reliable Arsenal journalists said either little on the matter, or were at best generally pessimistic about him signing. Fabrizio Romano didn't touch it until yesterday. Every article by David Ornstein was heavily caveated and guarded, despite Arsenal fans cherry-picking and mashing quotes together to suit what they need. Was there ever a 'massive offer' on the table as one account claimed? Probably not. Was there interest? Clearly. Was Vinicius really that keen? Based on the fact the renewal was settled so quickly, it seems unlikely. It's also a prime example of how much misinformation spreads when it is what someone wants to hear - even as late as yesterday morning, accounts were sharing quotes from allegedly reliable sources saying he'd be sold and Arsenal were almost certain to do the deal. Perhaps it is true and one day - like the legendary story that Chelsea came within days of signing Lionel Messi - we'll hear the story from the player himself. For now though, Arsenal have failed to secure their two primary left-sided targets, and in the process made it clear they have a significant budget and large wages available. It will have a knock-on effect when chasing other targets.
