The @ACA_Kenya today joined the @MOH_Kenya , the @ppbkenya , and fellow Ministries, Departments and Agencies at the inaugural meeting of the Interministerial Steering Committee for the Kenya National Action Plan on Substandard and Falsified Medical Products, convened under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary for Health , @HonAdenDuale , EGH.
As the national agency mandated to combat counterfeiting across all sectors of the economy, the @ACA_Kenya brings a critical enforcement and intelligence-gathering role to this whole-of-government effort, complementing the regulatory functions of the @ppbkenya in the fight against substandard and falsified medical products. The Authority's participation reflects the shared recognition that no single institution can address this threat in isolation, as counterfeiters and traffickers of falsified medicines operate across borders and jurisdictions with no regard for institutional mandates.
This initiative is of national importance because substandard and falsified medical products endanger the health and lives of Kenyans, undermine confidence in the healthcare system, and threaten the country's standing as a leader in healthcare delivery within the region. Through coordinated action with the Ministry of Health and other Committee members, @ACA_Kenya remains committed to protecting Kenyan consumers, safeguarding public health, and strengthening the integrity of the country's medical products supply chain.
This morning, the @ACA_Kenya joined more than 20 of Kenya's regulatory institutions at the @ForeignOfficeKE Stakeholder Consultative Breakfast Meeting ahead of the Global Trust Summit 2026.
Graced by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs H.E Musalia Mudavadi and Principal Secretary Dr Korir Sing'Oei, the meeting focused on how Kenya's regulatory institutions can collectively rebuild public confidence and strengthen institutional legitimacy.
As @ACA_Kenya remains committed to its mission of protecting consumers, securing markets, and strengthening trust in Kenya's institutions through rigorous enforcement and transparent governance, our participation reflects our dedication to institutional credibility.
ACA Calls on Innovators to Partner in Fight Against Counterfeiting at OUK Innovation Week
The @ACA_Kenya has called on Kenya’s innovators, researchers, students and technology developers to partner with the Authority in developing next-generation solutions to combat counterfeiting and protect intellectual property rights.
Speaking during the Open University of Kenya Innovation Week, ACA Executive Director Dr. @RobiKinga , PhD, said the fight against counterfeiting requires collaboration between government, academia, innovators and the private sector.
“The Anti-Counterfeit Authority does not have a monopoly on good ideas. We need you,” Dr. King’a said.
The event, held under the theme “Harnessing Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Development,” was officially opened by Hon. Prof. @Profshaukat , EBS, Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Innovation. It was hosted by Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Vice Chancellor of the @OpenUniKenya
In his remarks, Prof. Abdulrazak emphasized Kenya’s innovation potential, noting that innovation can drive entrepreneurship, create jobs and grow the economy.
“Kenya, through innovation, can reach that global status and compete with first world countries. Innovation creates entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship creates jobs and thus grows our economy. Innovators need to think outside the box and challenge conventional thinking,” he said.
Dr. King’a highlighted two key ACA initiatives: the Anti-Counterfeit Integrated Management System, a digital platform for real-time intelligence and coordinated enforcement, and the Anti-Counterfeit Security Device, which is being operationalised under Section 34B of the Anti-Counterfeit Act.
The Anti-Counterfeit Security Device introduces a digitally verifiable certification mark to be affixed to designated goods before they enter the Kenyan market. Consumers will verify products using smartphones, while enforcement officers will scan goods at borders, warehouses and retail points. The system is expected to make genuine products self-declaring, while generating actionable intelligence for enforcement and market surveillance.
Dr. King’a invited AI developers, blockchain specialists, IoT builders and data scientists to work with ACA through joint research, hackathons, pilot deployments and internship opportunities.
“The protector of innovation must itself be a consumer of innovation,” Dr. King’a said.
The OUK Innovation Week runs from 29 to 30 June 2026.
We are at the @OpenUniKenya Innovation Weekvand the timing could not be more critical.
As Kenya positions itself as a continental hub for innovation and technological advancement, one question becomes paramount: How do we protect the intellectual assets and innovations that will drive our economic transformation?
Our Executive Director & CEO, Dr. @mbugua_njoroge PhD, is in conversation with innovators, faculty members, entrepreneurs, and policymakers on this essential theme:
"Protecting, Standardising, and Commercialising Innovations"
The @ACA_Kenya exists at the intersection of innovation and integrity. Every innovation protected is an investment in Kenya's future.
Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) CEO, Dr. Robi M. King'a was also present at the event. He framed the relationship between ACA and KAM not merely as partners, but as two sides of the same fight. Manufacturers create value, ACA defends it. He reaffirmed that counterfeiting is not commerce, it is theft, from brands, workers, and the Republic itself.
Illicit trade costs Kenya an estimated KES 800 billion annually, with one in five products on Kenyan shelves suspected to be counterfeit. 44,000 jobs are lost every year as a result, and KES 153 billion in tax revenue foregone.
He further noted the alignment between ACA's mandate and KAM's Manufacturing Priority Agenda, highlighting that each of the four pillars: global competitiveness, export-led industrialisation, SME development, and agriculture for industry, has a counterfeiting dimension that ACA is actively working to address.
In closing, the DG called on KAM members to do four things: record their IP, train their distributors, report suspicious activity, and keep speaking out. With AIMS, a new digital enforcement management system, set to go live by November, and a major international IP symposium planned for October 2026, ACA signaled that the partnership with KAM is only deepening.

Where Industry Meets Integrity: ACA and KAM in One Fight
This evening, Dr. @mbugua_njoroge , PhD, Executive Director of the @ACA_Kenya and Vice-Chair of the @WIPO Advisory Committee on Enforcement, addressed the @KAM_Kenya AGM Members’ Cocktail at Hyatt Regency, Nairobi.
His message was clear:
“You build the genuine. We protect it.
You create value. We defend it.”
Dr. King’a commended KAM’s 60-year contribution to Kenya’s manufacturing sector, which supports 360,000 direct jobs, contributes KES 360 billion in annual taxes, and accounts for 7.3 percent of GDP.
He noted that counterfeiting remains a serious threat to manufacturers, consumers, jobs and national revenue. Illicit trade costs Kenya an estimated KES 800 billion annually, while one in every five products on Kenyan shelves is suspected to be counterfeit.
In response, ACA continues to strengthen enforcement, intelligence-led operations, border controls and public awareness. In the first three quarters of this financial year alone, the Authority seized counterfeit goods worth more than KES 500 million.
Dr. King’a called on manufacturers to take four actions:
Record. Train. Report. Speak.
Record your intellectual property.
Train your distributors.
Report suspicious activity.
Speak consistently against illicit trade.
As Kenya pursues industrial growth and expands into AfCFTA’s 1.4 billion-consumer market, protecting genuine brands is no longer optional. It is central to competitiveness, consumer safety and legitimate trade.
ACA will continue to walk with KAM side by side, border by border, and brand by brand in building a counterfeit-free Kenya.
