In defense of Indian 🇮🇳 democracy!
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi most successful visit to Norway a minor incident happened. A Norwegian journalist demanded that the prime minister starts holding press conferences. She claimed that Indian democracy is in bad shape.
May be its time to pause? May be its time to be a bit curious to the world’s largest democracy?
Two weeks ago five Indian states and territories held elections. The turn out in the battlefield state of West Bengal was 94%. In the last local election in Norway it was 62%, in many European local elections turn out is below 50%. Can voting in massive numbers be a signal Indians trust their democratic process?
In the same election BJP won big in Assam and West Bengal. It lost even bigger in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Can this diversity be a signal that Indian democracy is reflecting the will of the people?
The journalist referred to a democracy ranking putting India at 157 in the world, behind many dictatorships and deeply troubled states. When a ranking is so obviously contrary to common sense, why not ask critical questions to those making the ranking rather than demand that leaders shall comment on nonsense? I recommend Salvatore Babones book “Dharma democracy”. The book debunks convincingly the flawed methodology of these rankings.
It was referred to a ranking claiming it’s very dangerous to be a journalist in India. Reality is that it is more dangerous to be journalist in the US and far more dangerous in the vast majority of other nations in the world.
Let’s be real. India is not perfect. Of course there are incidents. India has a population the size of North America, South America and Europe combined. But India is much more peaceful than Europe or the Americas. That’s remarkable - given the ethnic, language and religious diversity of India and the many development challenges.
Unless we consider democracy a form of government only suited for some very small, peaceful and homogeneous Western European nations, may be we should commend Indian democracy?
India is the only major former UK colony which became and has remained a democracy. Its sometimes claimed that the Brits taught India democracy. If that was the case why isn’t Myanmar or Pakistan or the Gulf kingdoms democracies??? Reality is that Indian democracy is both homegrown and extraordinary successful.
My friend @INCKarnataka You folks are ruling us in Karnataka. We elected you to power. Please tell us what you have done for Kannadigas, the good jobs you have created for our youth, why you are destroying Bengaluru with inadequate investment, very high corruption and misgovernance? Corruption has gone up manifold with Rate Card in many departments. People say to file their annual report for pollution control they are demanding bribe and not accepting it till bribe is paid. Till now we have never heard of bribes for just filing a report.
Other states will take care of themselves. We are concerned about Karnataka.
As for formal job creation, please check the last 5 years too from the Karnataka Jobs Report. The momentum continues but what have you done to increase high paying job creation? You have increased our taxes in many areas. The EPFO data from 6 years shows Karnataka has been producing good formal jobs for long- but what is your role? Every year nearly 10 lakh youth reach the age of 21, about 8 lakh need good jobs. See the wages of the formal jobs. More than 75% are still less than Rs 20000 per month.
Look at the data in UDISE 24-25 of school exam results for 2024 India pass rate for secondary school board is 88%, Karnataka is 82%, Tamil Nadu is 92%, UP is 90%, AP is 89%! We are supposedly the richest state in India but pass % in class 10 board is less than India average, what have you done to improve this dismal rate? Our GER in Higher education in 21-22 is the lowest in south India, but today nearly 70% of faculty positions in govt colleges are guest faculty not full time teachers. Can we progress without giving our youth good Higher Education? What are you doing here?
You are borrowing money for your guarantees. In 22-23 revenue surplus was Rs 21689 cr, in 23-24 revenue deficit of Rs 2718 cr, in 24-25 revenue deficit of Rs 19454 cr, in B 25-26 Revenue deficit E is Rs 19,113 cr. Our @CMofKarnataka@siddaramaiah had drastically reduced our revenue deficit and was the best State FM but now you are borrowing money for subsidies.
As for govt jobs increasing are these Jobs on contract or regular full time govt jobs? Please give us data. People have not seen any large scale recruitment. In north Karnataka there were huge protests because you folks have not kept your promise for govt jobs.
Media reports say around Rs 7000 cr were reportedly spent on fixing potholes in city. But still we have huge potholes. Where did this money go?
Karnataka is the richest state in India with the highest per capita income for any large state. We want you folks to give us a CORRUPTION FREE GOVERNANCE WITH GOOD JOB CREATION FOR OUR YOUTH! Please do not ruin our STATE with inadequate investment and HIGH CORRUPTION! .
In 22-23 capital expenditures was Rs 56907 cr, in 23-24 came down to Rs 51911 cr, in 24-25 rs 60538 cr in B 25-26 E is Rs 68 172 cr! It has hardly increased in last 3 budgets! Can you create jobs without investment in infrastructure, capital investment in Karnataka? All figures from CAG STATE ACCOUNTS.
Look all of us want KARNATAKA TO BE NO 1 STATE., BENGALURU TO REMAIN RICHEST AND HIGH JOB PRODUCING CITY IN INDIA. CLEARLY we have big cause to worry because of increasing CORRUPTION AND BAD GOVERNANCE. please GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER.
