There is a narrative that Russia has stayed quiet on Iran, that it will not commit.

It is completely wrong.

Putin has said repeatedly, to Iran's foreign minister and to its president, that Russia will provide “every form of support”.

To understand why he means it, you have to understand what Iran actually is to Russia. It is not ‘just’ an ally of convenience. It is a matter of survival.

Russia has a permanent geographic curse. It is a giant with almost no warm water access.

Its seas freeze in winters and the exits it does have are controlled by others. Its Black Sea route runs through a strait Turkey (a NATO country) controls, then through the Mediterranean and Suez.

Over the last fifty years, it lost its naval foothold in Egypt, and more recently its ports in Syria, shrinking its reach even further.

And when Ukraine turned toward NATO, it threatened the LAST secure warm water anchor Russia had FOR ITS NAVY.

A global power that cannot reliably reach open ocean is a global power in decline. This is ONE of the most critical fears that drives Moscow these days..

Iran is the answer to THAT curse, from a different direction.

It is Russia's southern gate. Through Iran runs the International North South Transport Corridor, a 7,200 kilometer route that carries Russian goods down through the Caspian, across Iranian territory, to the Persian Gulf and onward to India, one of Russia's largest and most important markets.

It is not a theory. Russia and Iran signed the strategic partnership, Russia is financing the Rasht to Astara railway that completes it, and the whole point is to move Russian oil, gas and cargo to the world without touching a single chokepoint the West can close, Iran is entirely aligned with Russia in this regard.

This is WHY Iran is the mirror of Crimea.

Crimea secured Russia's warm water access in the south west, and Moscow annexed it because survival as a naval power demanded it.

Iran secures Russia's trade access to the south, a land route immune to Western navies, immune to sanctions on shipping, immune to Ukrainian sabotage of Russian vessels.

Lose Iran, and Russia is pushed back toward its frozen seas and its contested straits, its reach collapsing inward.

Keep Iran, and Russia has a permanent overland door to the Indian Ocean world that no blockade can shut.

So understand why Iran is not Syria.

In Syria, Russia backed a partner it could ultimately afford to let go. Iran is different.

Iran is infrastructure Russia has already paid for, a corridor it is building with its own money, the southern gate of its entire strategy to survive Western containment.

A great power does NOT walk away from the door it depends on to reach the world.

Russia will support Iran in this war, not out of loyalty alone, but because a broken Iran breaks Russia's escape from encirclement.

The West reads Russian silence as distance. It is not distance.

It is a power that has already decided, quietly, that this particular partner it cannot afford to lose.
