Who here loves the gooey gloopiness of mudpots??
Formed by standing surface water acidic enough to dissolve surrounding rock into clay, mudpots have a similar structure to hot springs but with a lower water supply, hence their gloopiness (not a technical term by the way, but it just feels right... right?). When you visit a thermal area in Yellowstone, you're also likely to smell the mudpots before you see them - that's due to the hydrogen sulfide gas that emanates through the mud. Rotten eggs, anyone? Mmmmm, yummy!
Popular mudpots in the park include Artists Paintpots (pictured here), Fountain Paint Pot, Mud Volcano, and West Thumb Paintpots.
In a week or two, aspens will reveal their hidden colors. The yellows and oranges were always there—chlorophyll just masked them. As days shorten and temps drop, chlorophyll fades, unveiling fall’s brilliance. Enjoy the green while it lasts—the reveal is near!
Syrian Woodpecker juvenile that I just observed from my kitchen window becomes 4th woodpecker species (after Greater, Middle & Lesser Spotted) seen from my apartment in Białystok city, NE Poland.
Fox steals man’s phone and live streams its escape in Russia’s Sakhalin
A Russian tourist has had the unusual distinction of having his phone stolen by a fox on the island of Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East, local media outlets reported last week.
The man, upon seeing a fox on a beach, started teasing the animal by showing it his phone as if it were food, saying “look at this delicious phone”. When the animal approached, it quickly whipped the phone out of the man’s hands and ran away. Realising the phone was not edible, the fox dropped it, leaving it in the sand. The man was promptly reunited with his phone and hopefully learned his lesson.
It's not often that I get to see a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) in the garden, but this week one dared to visit and stayed despite repeated attacks by the resident Cinnamon Hummingbirds. Hope it stay.
