Annah Mutheu, 48, is a self-proclaimed witch doctor from Machakos County who defies the stereotype of living in a dark, smoky hut. Instead, she owns a lavish Ksh 40 million mansion in Tala with a swimming pool, three lorries, three PSVs, three personal cars, a petrol station, and plots in Nakuru, Nairobi, Mombasa, and Malindi.
A Class 8 dropout from Katwii Primary School, Mutheu says she inherited the “spirit of sorcery” from her mother and has built her wealth through her trade. She has three children, never misses church on Sundays, and flies in and out of the country to meet clients. Politicians and other powerful individuals are reportedly among her customers.

Mutheu’s business is highly lucrative. She sees 60 to 80 clients daily and charges Ksh 1,000 as a consultation fee, earning even more during political seasons. For special services like “punishing an offender,” she charges top dollar, meaning her monthly income could run into millions.

Her success has been so noticeable that other people began scamming clients using her name. She dismisses the stereotype that witch doctors are poor, saying “I am a woman of means and my juju business has made me rich.” With a Ksh 350,000 sofa set reserved just for clients, Mutheu claims to be the richest in her trade.
