Microsoft's Xbox division is cutting 1,600 jobs... but critics are pointing to another number that's fueling outrage.

Microsoft says it's laying off 4,800 employees companywide, while federal data shows the company has also been approved for 2,273 H-1B employer-sponsored visa workers this year.

Critics say American workers are being pushed aside in favor of lower-cost foreign labor, reigniting the debate over the H-1B visa system and who should be filling U.S. tech jobs.

The H-1B program has become a major point of debate in Washington. President Trump recently tried to limit employers' use of the program by proposing a $100,000 fee on companies filing H-1B applications, saying the move would help prioritize American workers.

A federal judge later struck down the proposal, ruling that it effectively imposed a tax that only Congress has the authority to enact.
