**Pixar Removes Queer-Coded Elements from 'Elio' After Poor Test Screening Feedback, Overhauls Film in Major Rewrite**

Pixar's animated feature *Elio*, released in theaters on June 20, 2025, underwent significant changes during production following a disastrous early test screening in 2023. In that screening, no audience members raised their hands when asked if they would pay to see the film in theaters.

The original version of the film included queer-coded aspects for the 11-year-old protagonist Elio.

These elements reflected aspects of the initial director Adrian Molina's identity as an openly gay filmmaker, though the story was not intended as an explicit coming-out narrative due to the character's young age.

Specific removed details from earlier cuts included:
- Scenes suggesting Elio had a crush on another boy, such as pictures displayed in his bedroom showing a male crush.
- A pink bicycle associated with the character.
- A dream-like or imagined sequence where Elio pictured raising a child with his male crush.

- Other moments emphasizing Elio's interest in fashion, such as creating and showing off a pink tank top made from beach litter in a makeshift "trash-ion show" for a hermit crab, alongside a stronger focus on environmentalism.

Following negative feedback from test audiences and Pixar leadership, the film was heavily reworked.

This included directing the team to make Elio "more masculine" and stripping out the queer-coded subtext. New co-directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi took over after Molina exited the project in 2024.

Other changes involved voice actor America Ferrera leaving her role, shifts in character relationships (such as Olga becoming Elio's aunt rather than his mother), and alterations to the overall plot and tone.

Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter addressed the revisions in a profile, explaining the decision to prioritize broad commercial appeal over deeply personal or introspective elements. He stated: “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.”

Insiders and former staff described the process as involving constant "sanding down" of moments alluding to Elio’s potential queerness during production of the initial version.

Some creatives reportedly stepped away or expressed unhappiness with the changes, feeling the final character became more generic and less distinctive compared to the original cut's personality and charm.

The theatrical release of the revised *Elio* ultimately underperformed at the box office relative to expectations for a Pixar film, grossing around $154 million worldwide against its high production costs.

The alterations sparked discussions about representation in family-oriented animation and Pixar's shift toward more franchise-focused, commercially safe storytelling following earlier financial setbacks.
