@JenOrpinPainter @GrimArtGroup ....ie - a red bridge, then a blue one, then a red one (but in a random sequence). This was done so that drivers would stay alert while driving, because they would notice the coloured bridges, and would be looking out for the next bridge to see what colour it would be.

That stretch around Preston was the first section of Motorway in the UK, and when it was built, the bridges were painted in either red, blue or yellow with no two neighbouring bridges the same...
