If this is even remotely correct then the @The_Nationals will stand harshly condemned by their forthcoming generations, because they say they represent rural and regional AU where the risks and extremes of #climatechange fall the hardest https://t.co/245fMdPrvr
Great news for wetland conservation, and especially for #bitternsinrice that spend winter @TootgarookSwamp “MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire will compulsorily acquire a large section of Tootgarook Swamp to save it from housing development.” https://t.co/jUlMilxt7p
You can hear one of the Little Bitterns at this storage/re-use system. Magpie Geese have shown up too. Australasian Bitterns boom from adjacent rice. Bell frogs growl. There's a long history of Painted Snipe. Last night 50 people saw the huge potential of agricultural wetlands.
This is Norm Thomas from Tullakool. He's clutching the world's only Australasian Bittern stubby holder. Norm is passionate about continuing the legacy of his father, Evan Thomas, by providing on-farm habitat for significant wildlife. The Thomas family hosted our field day.
This Australian Spotted Crake posed nicely this morning. The highest densities of these wetland sneaks occur where there's a combination of mud, shallow water and cover. Once you get to know their different calls, combined with some patience, they're easily spotted. #wildoz
It's another beautiful morning out in the Riverina's rice crops. At this site, I've so far had Baillon's Crake, Swamp Harrier, Barking Marsh Frog and various other regular suspects.
Check out this beautiful, young Tiger Snake. I found it soaking up the morning rays on top of Lignum near Barham last week. See reply below for context. #wildoz
I found this Black Jezebel (Delias nigrina) today. She reminded me how fond of mistletoe I am. They lay their eggs on nothing else. It was @D0CT0R_Dave who first opened my eyes to the astounding value of Australia's 90-odd mistletoe species. #wildoz#ozbutterflies
It's a pleasure to watch Whiskered Terns float over the rice fields. They often follow the open water edges, right beside the tracks, pausing to dive on unsuspecting prey. This morning’s random farm had about 200. #bitternsinrice#wildoz
Benefits of fencing off Little Rushy Swamp at #Barmah from grazing are obvious from the air! The moira grass & river swamp wallaby-grass (the bright green area) are going gang busters - good news for the wildlife that depends on these rare #wetland plants. #envirowater
New research shows wildlife-friendly farming can quickly help bird populations bounce back, but large-scale rollout will be needed to reverse long-term declines https://t.co/TyoAB1hwaD
I was talking with the owner of this rice crop near Yenda today. Like so many Riverina rice growers, he said he’d be keen to enhance it for wildlife if it didn’t cost him much. I’m busy working on #bitternsinrice incentives but the sky’s the limit for these agricultural wetlands.
Despite being rarely seen, the tiny Baillon's Crake is one of the most common waterbirds breeding in the Riverina's rice fields. Their rattling, ratchet-like calls are reminiscent of crickets and frogs. #WildOz
