I’m confused. Is TikTok being banned for pushing propaganda to U.S. users, or for being able to obtain U.S. user data?

Because if it’s the former, foreign governments push propaganda on platforms like X, Facebook, and YouTube all the time. And if it’s the latter, China—and plenty of other countries—already access U.S. user data through many other means including legally obtaining it from data brokers and legally scraping it off the internet.

Plus, shouldn’t it ultimately be up to the individual user to decide whether or not they want to share their data with TikTok? People knowingly give their data to apps, banks, and websites every day. It's their decision, not the governments!
