The mainstream media's early Platner coverage presented him in the same way his campaign did: as a working-class oysterman who understood the struggle. When scandals emerged, his allies cited that image as proof he was relatably flawed. In reality, Platner:

— Went to an elite Connecticut boarding school thanks to his famous, Ivy League-educated architect grandfather and his Ivy League-educated attorney father
— Made little to no money farming oysters, instead living off of VA benefits
— Sold his oysters primarily to his mother's restaurant
— Bought his home not with a VA loan, as he and the New Yorker said, but with a $200k loan from his dad
