Having spoken with George Osborne a number of times about antisemitism, I can say with confidence that this decision will not have been taken lightly. George has always struck me as a genuine friend of the Jewish community, and this appears to have been driven entirely by security concerns.

But the fact that Jewish, and uniquely Jewish, cultural events are now considered unsafe to hold openly in one of Britain’s great institutions should alarm all of us. That is not a reflection on the community. It is a reflection on the failure of the authorities to properly confront and deter antisemitic hatred. As @Baddiel so perfectly articulates, Jews Don’t Count .

Whilst I understand it, I do not support the decision When intimidation succeeds, extremists do not retreat. They are emboldened. And every time society bends to that pressure, it sends a dangerous message about whose freedoms are considered negotiable
