At a London Climate Action Week discussion, “Making the Case for COP in a Fractured Geopolitical Environment,” organized by Chatham House, the COP30 President joined Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP32 President-Designate, and Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, representing COP31.

Gedion highlighted Ethiopia’s strong track record on climate action, emphasizing the policy interventions implemented over the past eight years. He noted that COP32’s priorities will include ensuring continuity by building on the leadership and outcomes of COP31, which will be co-hosted by Türkiye and Australia.

He underscored that this approach reflects the overarching principle of Medemer, working collaboratively with those who came before us, to strengthen collective action and help reignite hope in the multilateral process.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and COP32 President-Designate, Gedion Timothewos, briefed African Ambassadors on the Preparations for COP32 at the 42nd Quarterly Session of the UN Economic Commission of Africa’s Briefing to African Ambassadors at the ECA Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Ambassadors reaffirmed African support to Ethiopia’s COP32 Presidency and committed to work together with Ethiopia to ensure that COP32 achieves its Presidency’s goals and priorities.

The meeting, which was chaired by Churchill Ewumbue-Monono, Ambassador of the Republic of Cameroon to Ethiopia, who is also currently the Chair of the ECA’s Bureau of the Conference of Ministers (COM), was also addressed by Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UNECA.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, @GHessebon, is taking part in the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting, hosted in New Delhi on May 14-15, 2026.

The meeting is convened under India's BRICS Chairship, with the theme: "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability."

Addressing the high-level gathering, Minister Gedion underscored the urgent need for coordinated multilateral efforts to build a global order that equitably serves all nations.

He underscored, the current global crisis unless resolved urgently will lead to adverse economic and financial consequences and social instability that can not be contained within national borders.

He emphasised BRICS must play instrumental role in the pursuit of peace, and to champion collective security and development as cornerstone of a just and stable international system.

#Ethiopia’s accelerating industrial transformation, with manufacturing positioned at the center of economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched the 4th ‘Made in Ethiopia’ Expo today, underscoring Ethiopia’s strong push to expand its manufacturing sector.

The program has already delivered major results:

- Manufacturing input supply increased from about 9 million to over 15 million tons annually
- Over 3.4 GW of electricity supplied to new industrial investments
- Financing surged from 8.1 billion birr to over 50 billion birr for SMEs, and 262+ billion birr for large industries
- $2.28+ billion in foreign currency allocated to the sector
- Production capacity utilization improved from 47% to 67%
- Manufacturing growth rose from 4.8% to 10.7%, with further growth expected
- Import substitution saved up to $4.85 billion, while exports continue to grow
- More than 2,800 investments attracted and 1.4 million jobs created

The Expo itself has become a key national platform, linking industries, attracting investment, while drawing hundreds of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors. Overall, the launch highlights Ethiopia’s accelerating industrial transformation, with manufacturing positioned at the center of economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, held discussions in Stockholm with Ms. Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden.

The two foreign ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations, as well as on issues of mutual interest in the Horn of Africa and at the international level.

Gedion underscored the longstanding and historic ties between Ethiopia and Sweden, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening their friendship.

He further highlighted the need to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, extending an invitation to Swedish companies to take advantage of the favorable investment opportunities available in Ethiopia.

For her part, the Swedish Foreign Minister noted the strong relations between the two countries and expressed Sweden’s interest in enhancing cooperation with Ethiopia at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos held discussions in Oslo with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Espen Barth Eide.

During the meeting, held as part of Gedion’s ongoing visit to Scandinavian countries, he underscored that there are numerous areas in which Ethiopia and Norway can further strengthen their cooperation.

Highlighting the strong relations between the two countries, Minister Gedion noted that the longstanding friendship should be further expanded, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and environmental protection.

For his part, Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Espen Barth Eide, mentioned that various Norwegian companies are keen to take advantage of the investment opportunities available in Ethiopia. He also affirmed that Norway would extend the necessary support to Ethiopia as it prepares to host COP32.

During his stay in Oslo, Gedion also held discussions with Norway’s Minister of International Development, the Minister of Climate and Environment, the Chief Executive Officer of Norway’s Investment Fund, the Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, as well as Norwegian investors, focusing on areas of mutual cooperation.

Prime Minister @AbiyAhmedAli has been appointed as the African Union Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health by the African Union. The announcement recognises his leadership and Ethiopia’s growing role in advancing artificial intelligence and innovation across the continent.

The appointment letter noted: “Your Excellency’s leadership in promoting digital transformation and emerging technologies has helped position artificial intelligence as a key tool for sovereignty, efficiency, and inclusive growth in Africa. Your continued advocacy for strategic autonomy and technological empowerment will be instrumental in positioning the continent as a global leader in responsible and equitable AI adoption.”

Ethiopia’s progress in digitization and artificial intelligence launched and accelerated significantly under the Prime Minister’s active engagement over the last few years. Initiatives such as the expansion of digital infrastructure, the rollout of e-government services, investments in innovation ecosystems, and the establishment of an AI institute and development of a national AI strategy have laid a strong foundation for transformation. In addition, plans to establish a dedicated AI university are expected to strengthen research, talent development, and continental collaboration in emerging technologies.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Gedion Timothewos, addressed the Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) virtually today under the agenda item “Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Peace and Security in Africa.” The meeting was convened as part of Ethiopia’s Chairship of the Council for April 2026.

Opening the meeting, Minister Gedion noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping governance, economic development, and security worldwide. He highlighted that governments and institutions are increasingly integrating AI into decision-making processes, public administration, security systems, and economic planning.

The Minister underlined that AI presents both opportunities and challenges for Africa. When harnessed responsibly, he said, it can strengthen conflict prevention, enhance early warning mechanisms, support mediation efforts, and improve governance systems across the continent. At the same time, he cautioned that the misuse of AI could exacerbate disinformation, cybercrime, and potential exploitation by terrorist and criminal networks, underscoring the need for appropriate regulatory frameworks.

Minister Gedion emphasized the importance of building on the African Union Artificial Intelligence Strategy and welcomed the establishment of the AU Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence, Peace and Security. He also noted the designation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as the AU Champion on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, reflecting growing political commitment to advancing the continent’s digital agenda.

Concluding his remarks, Minister Gedion underscored that the adoption of Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional but a strategic necessity, noting that the decisions taken today will shape how emerging technologies influence governance, peace, and development across Africa in the years ahead.

Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ambassador Hirut Zemene, delivering Ethiopia’s national statement, underscored the need to translate the AU’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy into practical action through appropriate governance and regulatory frameworks that ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies. She also highlighted the potential of AI to strengthen Africa’s peace and security architecture, including through enhanced early warning systems, preventive diplomacy, and improved analytical capacities.

Ambassador Hirut further highlighted Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to harness AI in support of governance and public service delivery, noting initiatives that integrate AI-based solutions into government systems and enhance public safety through data-driven approaches. She also emphasized Ethiopia’s focus on building human capital and technological expertise through initiatives aimed at advancing research, education, and digital skills development in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, and cyber security.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Council members to exchange views on strengthening Africa’s peace and security architecture through AI, developing governance frameworks for its responsible use, and enhancing the continent’s capacity in digital infrastructure, research, education, and innovation.

Deliberations and presentations were made on how governments and institutions in Africa are integrating AI into decision-making processes, public administration, security systems, and economic planning.
