So many have left this platform and I find myself slipping away too. I won't be checking in so regularly in 2025.
I'd like to stay in touch, so hope you will find me elsewhere: on other social media or my blog, which has subscribe and rss options.

@allazov_kamal@GooglePEProgram I suppose the plaques on the Wellington monument (the "park towers") depict the "kingdoms." The Phoenix Column has royal arms carved into it.
As noted, I am mostly out of here, but here is my once-a-year rating of new apples I've had, plus some revisions.
Consider bookmarking or subbing to my blog if you'd like to stay in touch. (Also bluesky etc.) Deets in profile.

At dusk they went, a-wassailing, carrying lanterns and spiced apple cake and dark polished bowls of lamb's-wool; a happy procession along the frozen lane to the orchards, which lay beyond Old Fox's cottage.
Old Twelfth Night, a very old day, a day still held in the old places of England, a day for waking the bare rounsepiked trees from their winter slumber. Old Fox knew the Dorset dryades well, they were elegant and kindly spirits and very fond of him. And as they sang the songs of new buds and hope a-kindle, the songs of Pan and the songs of Arcadie, the trees began to silver in the winter darkness until they gleamed as bright as the crescent moon above.
Wassailing the apple trees traditionally occurs on Old Twelfth Night, 17 Jan. The Queen of the #Wassail (good health) offers the trees in the orchards cider-soaked bread. She then knocks on the trunk of the oldest tree to awaken the Apple Tree Man, the fertility spirit within.
Traditional orchards are now rare habitats in the UK β around two thirds of orchards have been lost since 1960. Fruit trees support a diverse range of wildlife, so planting an apple tree can help boost biodiversity.

The rise and fall of the apple harvest, as expressed each week at farmers market.
Each block is an apple variety, building to October climax, then dropping off until markets end.

I have decided to track this, make a record of my local fortnightly vibe shift. Starting on the winter solstice seems appropriate to me, so tomorrow then.
