This rhetoric is why I believe the glamorization of this coaching moment is problematic. I played competitive sport and this style of coaching does not land as safe or productive for me. And I don’t want to have to endure someone yelling in my face regardless of the message.
@BrianKight Thanks for replying @BrianKight My mind keeps going to the construct of the sport ethic and how this clip and the subsequent interviews play into that dynamic. I also notice that for myself, as a player and a coach, this would be a hard no. It doesn’t land as safe in anyway.
Thinking of being on coaching staffs, building a culture of coming with solutions has been transformative. And, I don’t think we can expect people to start at level 4. Level 4 assumes shared mental models, clear understanding of purpose and process. This takes time.
I stole this idea and now use it with every single employee.
It’s the best illustration I’ve seen of teaching someone to be high agency.
It says there are 5 levels of work:
Level 1: “There is a problem.”
Level 2: “There is a problem, and I’ve found some causes.”
Level 3: “Here’s the problem, here are some possible causes, and here are some possible solutions.”
Level 4: “Here’s the problem, here’s what I think caused it, here are some possible solutions, and here’s the one I think we should pick.”
Level 5: “I identified a problem, figured out what caused it, researched how to fix it, and I fixed it. Just wanted to keep you in the loop.”
Using this framework, here’s what I say to every new employee…
You will live at Level 4 from Day 1 and as we build trust you will rise to Level 5.
Being high agency doesn’t just mean tackling problems in this way. It means your entire way of working should be oriented to being a Level 4+ employee.
Plz feel free to steal it as well.
And ty @stephsmithio for the framework!

Our greatest regrets are rarely failures to reach our goals. They're usually failures to uphold our values.
Few people wish they'd been more ambitious. Many wish they'd been more courageous and generous.
Success lies in building a career. Fulfillment lies in building character.

Research on college athletes shows that 50% report feeling anxious and 89% admit to using alcohol to cope with pressure and injury. (Bullard et al., 2020; Carreathers, 2020). We know programs focus on physical performance, but what about mental?
I know basically nothing about wrestling, but I think this video epitomizes the pressures that athletes experience. And it makes me wonder what sports organizations are doing to support the mental wellbeing of athletes.
