It's puzzling that people blame "the NHS" for the state it's in. It's not a religion, simply a mechanism for paying for universal care (tax funded, free at the point of need, largely publicly provided). The main reasons it can't cope with demand, in no particular order are...
1. Alarming levels of child poverty, health inequality and unhealthy ageing.
2. Pointless, costly and harmful political redisorganisations and outsourcings.
3. Reluctance of politicians to pay for and secure safe staffing levels and infrastructure
4. Insufficient focus on prevention, primary care, social care and education
5. Inability of those in authority to tell the truth, particularly when things go wrong
6. Lack of accountability for those who cover up the truth, suppress whistleblowers and kick obvious scandals into the long grass.
7. Treating the staff so poorly that want to leave, or do leave, to seek a less stressful, better paid job.
This has got nothing to do with the NHS as a funding system, but the political and voter choices that have allowed it to be underfunded - and hence unsafe - for so long. It's rare in life you get "more for less". In healthcare, we usually get "less for less". We are currently not providing prompt universal healthcare but rationing it so severely that people are suffering and dying for want of health, dental and social care. Myriad public inquiries have recommended rebuilding the NHS around safety and quality, but until we address these issues we are just pissing in the wind...
This doesn't sound much like comedy, but I will try to add a few gags in before the Edinburgh fringe...

Hi, NHS psychiatrist here. The longer I work in psychiatry, the more & more I’m constantly reminded that one of the most harmful things for our mental health - if not the most harmful - is poverty.
God is not a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, a Buddhist or a Sikh. The way I see it, the good news is that God is the lover of all humanity, regardless of belief, race, ethnicity, age, ability, disability, status, gender, sexuality or gender orientation.

To be a refugee is a mark of strength, not of shame. So, rather than trying to ‘off-load’ them, we have a moral obligation to protect them as they flee bombs, guns & tyrants - and to acknowledge that, throughout history our society has been hugely enriched by their contribution.
Never measure the prosperity of a nation by its number of millionaires. What really matters is the absence of poverty, the prevalence of health, the inclusion of its education system, the care of its most vulnerable members, and the equality of opportunity it extends to all.
Great to see @rcgp calling for extra funding for practices in deprived areas as part of 'a comprehensive review of the Carr-Hill formula'.
Hot on heels of @NikkiKF and great news for #generalpractice@deependgp

This week I’ve been looking at what we can do to tackle the health inequalities that don’t just hold back our economy, but are a personal tragedy for all too many people across South Yorkshire.
I want to give a huge shout out to all the support workers/emotional well-being workers/community support teams and all providing intensive holistic support for vulnerable patients. Those I have met this week were working above and beyond for people with complex needs- thank you
