The Inauguration of GERD: A Moment of Greatness and Joy for Ethiopia 🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹
September 2025
A new chapter in African development and national pride has been written as Ethiopia officially inaugurates the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)—the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa. This monumental event is not just the commissioning of a dam, but the celebration of a dream realized, a renaissance reborn, and a great collective achievement for Ethiopia, its people, and all who love the nation.
The mood across Ethiopia is one of overwhelming happiness and pride. GERD represents a towering symbol of hope, dignity, and self-reliance—a testimony that greatness is possible when a nation stands united.
GERD: A Power of Powers
The GERD is not merely a structure of concrete and steel—it is a power of powers, generating not only electricity but empowering the country across multiple dimensions:
Electric Power: With a projected generation capacity of 5,150 megawatts, GERD will more than double Ethiopia’s current electricity production, providing power to millions and transforming lives in both urban and rural areas.
Economic Power: The dam promises to boost industrial growth, create jobs, and position Ethiopia as a regional energy exporter, offering power to neighboring countries including Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
Social Power: GERD will reduce energy poverty and open the door to education, healthcare, clean water, and digital access for countless Ethiopian communities.
Technological Power: Built and managed primarily by Ethiopian engineers and institutions, GERD is a showcase of the country’s growing technical and engineering capabilities.
Political Power: GERD reinforces Ethiopia's sovereignty and right to pursue independent development. Despite pressure, threats, and diplomatic hurdles, the project stood firm.
Indeed, GERD is more than a dam—it is a MEGA project in every sense: a rallying cry to Make Ethiopia Great Again.
A Nation’s Unified Effort
What makes GERD even more extraordinary is how it was built—not by foreign investors or international aid, but through the contributions of Ethiopians from all walks of life. Civil servants donated a month’s salary, the diaspora purchased bonds, farmers gave what they could, and spiritual leaders united the nation in prayer and purpose. Management, laborers, engineers, and citizens gave their money, time, and sweat.
It is rare in modern history to witness a major infrastructure project that is truly people-funded and people-driven. GERD is just that—a national monument forged by unity.
Triumph in the Face of Adversity
GERD’s journey was not without resistance. The project faced:
Geopolitical opposition, especially from downstream countries like Egypt, which feared for its historical share of Nile waters.
Diplomatic tensions, with failed negotiations and intense international scrutiny.
Internal challenges, including technical complexity, financial strain, and occasional mismanagement.
But in the end, Ethiopia prevailed—not through confrontation, but through resilience, dialogue, and an unwavering belief in its sovereign right to use its natural resources for its people’s development.
A Renaissance Realized
With GERD’s inauguration, Ethiopia has firmly placed itself on the path of renewal and transformation. It is, in every sense, a renaissance—economic, social, and cultural. The dam has become a national symbol, much like the obelisks of Axum or the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela—only this time, it powers the future.
For Ethiopians young and old, GERD stands as a reminder: greatness is not inherited, it is built. It is built with courage, with unity, and with vision. (1/2)

Everyone sees the aircraft.
Almost nobody sees the machine behind it.
This week, Ethiopian Airlines gave us access to the people, systems, technology, training, and infrastructure that power one of the world's most respected airlines.
What stood out wasn't just the scale. It was the discipline, precision, and long-term vision required to build an organization that connects Africa to the world every single day.
Too often, conversations about Africa focus on potential. What we witnessed in Addis Ababa was execution.
Behind every departure and arrival is a world-class operation built by thousands of people working toward a shared mission.
Thank you to Ethiopian Airlines for the invitation and for the opportunity to see firsthand what excellence looks like behind the scenes.
The world's attention often goes to what is visible.
Real impact is built by what isn't.
