From a friend in Korea, about a statement from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions on Venezuela: “I am writing to urgently bring to your attention a formal statement issued on January 3, 2026, by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), South Korea’s largest national labor federation. On that date, KCTU released an official declaration condemning the United States in extreme and unequivocal terms, branding U.S. actions as ‘imperialist war crimes’ and characterizing the United States as an aggressor state committing illegal invasion, mass civilian harm, and regime-change warfare. The statement asserts as fact that the Trump administration: - Invaded Venezuela by attacking civilian and military facilities in Caracas, - Abducted Venezuela’s sitting president and his wife, - Violated international law by engaging in unlawful use of force, - Deliberately destroyed Venezuela’s economy and social infrastructure through sanctions and military pressure, - And is pursuing imperial domination and forced regime change under the guise of global power politics. These claims are not presented as allegations or disputed interpretations. They are stated categorically, in the language of criminal indictment, and framed as moral condemnation rather than political critique. What is especially alarming is that this rhetoric was issued not by fringe activists or anonymous commentators, but by a nationally organized federation representing a major segment of South Korea’s labor movement, under its official name and authority. The statement goes further by portraying U.S. military and strategic actions as inherently criminal and predatory, while framing authoritarian regimes as victims of American ‘imperial violence.’ This is not policy disagreement. It is the normalization of hostile, dehumanizing language toward the United States, circulated domestically as a moral directive. At a moment of heightened global security tension, such messaging within an allied country raises serious concerns about ideological alignment, information influence, and the broader environment in which anti-U.S. narratives are being legitimized and amplified. I am not writing to request any specific response. However, I believe it is essential that U.S. policymakers be aware that this level of explicit vilification of the United States is being issued openly and formally by organized groups within South Korea.
