#OTD in 1789 Betsi Cadwaladr was born. She was a Welsh nurse who, aged 65, worked in Scutari during the Crimean War. She became famous for her fight with bureaucracy, demanding medical supplies at the front and hygienic working conditions. She died a pauper in 1860.

A government inquiry into education in Wales became known as The Treason of the Blue Books. It was critical of Welsh people and the language. Jane Williams published pamphlets in reply and later became the editor of Betsi's autobiography. This other heroine appears in our play.
