Irish potatoes are more than just food in Rwanda—
They are life,
business,
and opportunity.

From the hills of Musanze to the cool climate of Nyabihu,
Irish potatoes grow strong and feed millions.

Walk through these areas and you’ll see them everywhere—
Green fields stretching across valleys,
Farmers harvesting with hands full of hope,
Sacks of potatoes lined up by the roadside,
Waiting for market.

Irish potatoes are a staple in many Rwandan homes.
Boiled, fried, mashed—served at weddings, restaurants, and street food stands.

But for farmers?
Potatoes are income.
They pay school fees.
They build houses.
They create jobs.

One hectare of well-managed Irish potatoes can produce up to 25–30 tons.
But here’s the challenge—
Not every farmer reaches that yield.

Why?
Because of limited access to improved seeds.
Because of poor storage.
Because of price fluctuations when everyone harvests at the same time.
Because of a lack of value addition.

That’s where change is needed.

We need:
1. Quality seed distribution
2. Farmer training on disease and pest control
3. Access to storage facilities to prevent post-harvest losses
4. Processing industries to make chips, crisps, and packaged products
5. Digital tools to track prices and link farmers to buyers

I’ve visited farms where potatoes rot because the market is flooded.
I’ve seen women walk kilometers carrying heavy sacks with no guaranteed buyers.

This is not a crop problem.
It’s a system problem.

And it can be solved.

If we invest in cold storage in rural areas,
If we encourage youth-led businesses to process and package potatoes,
If we connect farmers to real-time market information through mobile phones—
We will reduce waste,
Increase profits,
And keep more youth in agriculture.

Irish potato farming can be modern.
Mechanized.
Profitable.

I’ve seen cooperatives doing it right—
Organized planting seasons,
Bulk selling,
Collective bargaining.
That’s the future.

Young people, don’t ignore this crop.
It’s not just food.
It’s a full value chain waiting for innovation.

From farm to fork,
From field to factory,
Irish potatoes can drive Rwanda’s rural economy.

And together, we can build a system
Where no farmer watches their hard work go to waste.
Where every harvest brings pride,
And every sack brings profit.

Let’s grow better.
Let’s farm smarter.
Let’s turn Irish potatoes into power.

Let me find small troubles 😁

Someone said he bought white beans while picking it - he noticed there were no weevils in the beans and he realized it was a GMO & threw it away!

😂😂😂

This is so funny guys & he just foolishly wasted his money.

I mean the reason why researchers at Institute of Agricultural Research Samaru Zaria developed this Bean is to prevent weevil infestation.

Bcs of Weevil infestation Farmers would use a lot of pesticides almost 4-5 times before harvest & the residue in the beans has been linked to Cancer.

After those plenty pesticides, Mallams will also soak the beans in Sniper so Weevil will not touch the beans when they store it. Now imagine the amount of p0is0ns in that beans before it gets to your table.

Nigeria Agricultural Researchers now design a variety that will not need all those pesticides & Snipers bcs they have designed the seed in such a way that it repels weevil, they added the things weevil do not like so when weevil touch the beans they run e.g Insects don't like Garlic but it is good for human.

Would you say the Researchers are bad people? The variety is what many farmers have planted in the North since 2019. The seed is everywhere if you want to buy. It is Nigerian Made not from anyone or Bill Gate.

But my people lack knowledge about these things and if you try to explain dem go start dragging you & say terrible things.

If you buy beans and you don't seed Weevil you should be happier instead throwing it away and wasting your money.

Don't follow online activists & conspiracy theories. It's all irrelevance!

Omo iya mi, the market is there. The population is growing rapidly and they must eat. It's a must!! Invest in agriculture aggressively the same way the so called elites invest in real estate. ☺️
