@rickbur1n I love David Niven as the supposedly *27* year-old Carter in a Matter of Life and Death. Something about facing a heavenly trial must prematurely age you
@SpinningHugo Two questions (from genuine curiosity): 1. Do you think ouster clauses are inconsistent with the rule of law? 2. Do you think the Rwanda bill contains ouster clauses?
@alsnotepad Ok yes! That’s a better reason I think to doubt it’s an example. The parts don’t look like they have value in those cases (if you agree with Dancy). I *think* that initially gave me some hesitation about whether they fit the bill, but then I forgot about that in my follow-up.
@alsnotepad If you agree with Dancy (but not just him) that the pleasure felt by those who enjoy public hangings is in no way good - ie it’s not a ‘silver lining’ that we can find solace in (cf Singer on the value of Hitler’s happiness) - then I think it would count.
@alsnotepad Dancy’s examples of immoral pleasures? Taking pleasure in fox hunting or enjoying public hangings. The badness of the whole there seems to infect the (typical) goodness of pleasure.
@KimptonNye@DMortini Perhaps some other dimension might do better (if eg normalcy is a gradable concept), but then the task is to identify the relevant dimension, not (primarily) to set the threshold. But perhaps where-to-set-the-threshold questions can be ways to qualify some accounts.
@KimptonNye@DMortini Eg what relevant dimension do eyewitness testimony (acceptable) and demographic statistical evidence (unacceptable) fall along? Reliability? Doesn’t obviously sort the cases right.
@keithfrankish I’d say there are two reasons to avoid it: 1) it can be a kind of grandstanding; 2) it makes the conversation annoying to follow for 3rd parties (and for everyone actually).
