The chapter explores Indonesia’s economic evolution over the past two decades, focusing on productivity, competitiveness, and the role of savings and investment allocation in industrial development. It identifies priorities for supply-side reforms, emphasizing the need for an investment-driven, export-oriented strategy to support diversification into higher-value manufacturing and services.

Defending The Indefensible

Lagi ramai dibicarakan, komunikasi pemerintah katanya buruk. Saya sudah melihat dari yang dianggap buruk (PCO Hasan Nasbi) sampai yang dibilang lebih baik (Menkomdigi Meutya Hafid). Untuk yang disebut belakangan, saya menonton wawancaranya dengan Garuda TV. Meski secara penyampaian lebih halus, substansinya problematik karena secara umum punya semangat mengerdilkan kebebasan berpendapat.

Saya kira, masalahnya yang utama adalah karena mereka bukan sedang mengomunikasikan kebijakan. Yang mereka lakukan adalah defending the indefensible.

Awalnya adalah kebijakan-kebijakan ini memang tidak punya fondasi kajian yang kokoh. Misalnya, apakah pilihan MBG lebih baik dari program-program yang dipangkas, baik secara jangka pendek maupun jangka panjang? Apakah revisi UU TNI justified dari sisi pemerintahan demokratis?

Bukan hanya warga yang cemas, jangan-jangan mereka juga cemas sendiri; "Ini kita lagi ngapain?" Belum lagi kecemasan oportunistik (yang manusiawi-manusiawi saja), apakah mereka akan tetap dipertahankan di kabinet? Maka, yang dilakukan bukanlah komunikasi yang bisa menarik anggukan warga, baik secara rasional maupun emosional, melainkan pembelaan yang kira-kira disukai oleh atasannya alias presiden yang menginginkan kebijakan A-Z.

Mereka tidak sedang berkomunikasi dengan rakyat, mereka sedang berlomba menggonggongi rakyat.

Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.

So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.
