A grand beginning to a historic edition. The roadshow announcing the 20th Grand Toshali Swadeshi Mela 2026 was formally flagged off at Ekamra Haat, Bhubaneswar, in the gracious presence of Hon’ble Minister Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Dept.
A workshop cum training program on “S&T intervention for revitalizing Heritage Metal Crafts of Odisha” is organized by the CSIR- Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar in association with Directorate of Handicraft, HT&H Deptt ,Govt. of Odisha today at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar.
The programme is inaugurated by Sri Pradeep Bal Samanta, Hon’ble Minister of Cooperation , Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts as Chief Guest. Smt. Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary , Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department as the guest of Honour in presence of Smt. Nibedita Prusty, the Director of Handicrafts, Odisha, Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar and Senior Scientists of IMMT, Bhubaneswar.
This workshop-cum-training programme focuses on introducing science and technology interventions to strengthen Odisha’s traditional brass and bell metal craft sector. The initiative aims to upgrade artisans’ technical expertise, improve product quality, expand livelihood opportunities, and foster long-term economic sustainability.
Nearly 300 artisans from across the state have participated in the programme, reflecting the widespread interest and commitment to preserving this heritage craft.
During the sessions, CSIR-IMMT experts will showcase modern brass melting furnaces and demonstrated innovative S&T-based techniques in metal forming and surface finishing, offering artisans practical exposure to advanced methods that can transform their craft.

Eighteen new District Level Institutional Handicrafts Training Centres in 17 Districts have been approved to nurture the next generation of Artisans.
Each centre with an intake capacity of 20 will offer Basic Training in a wide array of Crafts- from Paddy Craft, Dhokra Casting, Horn Craft, Brass & Bell Metal, Golden Grass, Wood Carving, Paper Mache, Bamboo Craft, Tribal Jewellery, Lacquer Craft, Tribal Painting, Dongaria Kandha Embroidery Shawl Making, to Terracotta- reflecting the State’s commitment to preserving and promoting its timeless artistic heritage.
