Took over a team that finished with 56 pts that immediately got to the ECF and to the SCF three years later is. That is, quite literally, the definition of getting the team to the next level.

And what about the 06 playoffs when a fully healthy roster got man handled by the Sabres? Largely the same roster that started 06/07? Running it back with Esche as the starter in 06/07 was grounds to be aweful alone.

The first 12 months of Holmgren were magic.

@ADiMarco25 In a vacuum it was a great trade for the Flyers they ended up with more overall skill in the deal, where it hurt them was Briere was in the 18th hole of his career and having a younger skilled 2C to play behind Giroux would have been ideal, also makes Scheen a W full time

The worst team in franchise history with a goalie tandem of Esche/Niittymaki is a mess in my book.

Also, a late 1st RD pick that ended up being Jonathon Blum is not an overpay to get the rights to Timonen and Hartnell and having them avoid going to market, imo.

@purestofbois @ADiMarco25 Carter and Richards both missed a qtr of the season the yr before and they traded Forsberg. He didn’t inherit a mess. He had a solid core to piece around. He overpaid for Hartnell/Timonen. Briere signing & Coburn/Carle trades were fine.

Clarke's constructed roster? He added Upshall, Briere, Biron, Timonen, Smith, Coburn, Hartnell and Lupul (to say nothing of depth guys like Dowd, Thoresen and Modry) to the '08 team after he took over from Clarke.

He completely overhauled that team in 12 months after Clarke.

You're right, those two trades (and the summer of '12) was amazing in a vacuum.

But that doesn't change the fact that he never fixed the goaltending - tho Steve Mason is a lot better than we give him credit for - and hitched his wagon to two 35 (+) yr old defensemen.

As for the '10 team, Emery was the starter and got hurt in February. After that Leighton was the starter and was hurt until Game 5 vs Boston.

Stability in net would've changed a lot in the first three games vs Boston.

I wouldn't say it was the first domino - it was the Pronger injury - but I agree with the roster construction part.

After the acquisition of Voracek, Schenn and Simmonds along with already having Giroux, Briere and JVR they should've drafted Dougie Hamilton instead of Couturier.

@ADiMarco25 Good value. Bad results. First domino in the proverbial death of the team. Locked them into fatally flawed roster construction from the beginning with no viable 2C to play behind giroux.
