Debunking the Phantom Debts and Ecological Loan Fallacy

My attention has been drawn to trending claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind inherited debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions. This is completely false.

We systematically liquidated historical gratuities and arrears dating back several years, amounting to over ₦35 billion. At the point of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did we owe anything to any contractor for projects duly executed and certified.

The ₦2 billion ecological fund in question was released barely three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. Despite pressure to spend the money, I refused, insisting that it should be left for my successor because government is a continuum and the funds were tied to a specific project.

The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.

It is important to stress that funds tied to specific projects or set aside for particular purposes were not even included in the over ₦75 billion in savings we left behind.

If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning. -PO

Let us begin today’s #XTuesday for the release of MAZI NNAMDI KANU by strongly urging President Tinubu to implement the standing Directives of the United Nations to de-proscribe IPOB, and halt the criminalization of its activities and alleged members. Below is a verbatim excerpt from the said Directives:

“We are particularly concerned by the designation of IPOB as a
terrorist organization and allegations that its leaders, supporters, sympathisers, and
even some individuals who had merely displayed its symbols have been arrested and appear to have been charged as "terrorists" on occasion.

“While recognizing the rise of regional tensions, as well as a range of challenging political claims advanced by IPOB, we nonetheless warn against the categorization of uncomfortable or challenging political speech as terrorism.

“We respectfully advance our views that the human rights implications of this proscription are considerable and not in compliance with international human rights law binding on Nigeria, or with best practice in relation to counter-terrorism strategies.

“Accordingly, we respectfully urge your Excellency' Government to reconsider the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist group and address the legal concerns on regulation of assembly, freedom of expression, and due process outlined in this communication. We stand ready to

The CBT centers in the South East should be kind to us. Only 2 out of all the centers are supporting us.

The South East Science and Maths Olympiad is a non-profit and is free for all our participating children.

The prices we are getting from all of them are outrageous. We are estimating about ₦65 million to pay CBT centers for the mock and elimination exams for the Olympiad for 43,000 students.

That’s one area where we will need support for the 2027 South East Science and Maths Olympiad.

Dear Alex.
Thanks for all you are doing.
This issue of WAEC result is now costing my son his admission at York University, Canada. We just received a mail advising that the University may not proceed with the admission due to the WAEC result which deviated significantly from his transcript, his SAT (1,510 of 1,600 points).

The same boy scored 331 in JAMB. The boy is weeping now.
But the school asked for any explanation of a general problem with the WAEC.
I am writing to check with you if I can have the link to the program you just had online now on YouTube. I watched it online and my son recorded on the phone but the file is too large to go through the Internet.
Please can you help?
We need to prove that the result ( 2As, 4Bs, and 3C) does not represent his true performance.

He finished at Loyola Jesuit and that is the school that is most affected by this problem. We know why. The school does not play ball.

We have now institutionalized ISEE, and it is now a formally registered non-governmental organization.

ISEE was rejected several times by the Corporate Affairs Commission until we amended the name to INITIATIVE FOR SCHOOL EXCELLENCE AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

Our chairman is Prof. Bath Nnaji, and I will continue to lead the vision.

Our members are Nathan Nwachuku, Eke Urum, and Tony Udeani.

The goal is for the vision to outlive our generation and lead us to civilization.

What I am hearing about WAEC Nigeria is deeply troubling.

This year recorded the highest performance in the history of WAEC and they are not happy about it.

There is something many Nigerians do not understand about WAEC grading.

The score required for A1, B2, B3, C4 etc. may not simply be a permanently fixed number every year.

From the information available to me, WAEC applies statistical standardisation/normalisation based partly on the overall performance of candidates.

In simple English:

If a paper is unusually difficult and candidates generally perform poorly, the threshold required for a particular grade can effectively be lower.

If candidates perform extraordinarily well, the threshold can become much higher.

So hypothetically, what qualifies as an A in one examination could be around 60, while the statistical threshold in another circumstance could be 80, 90 or even higher.

Your final grade therefore may not tell the complete story of your raw score.

This year involved candidates sitting examinations under different modes, including computer-based/hybrid arrangements and the traditional paper-based system.

And there are serious allegations that questions circulated ahead of time in some paper-based centres.

If that happened on a significant scale, it could artificially inflate the overall performance of that population.

Then comes the critical question:

When WAEC carried out its standardisation, were candidates from fundamentally different examination conditions treated as one population?

Because if leaked questions artificially pushed one group’s scores upwards, and those abnormal scores subsequently influenced grade thresholds, an innocent student who genuinely scored very highly could suddenly appear statistically ordinary.

Imagine scoring what would ordinarily be excellent marks, only to receive a surprisingly poor grade because you were being compared against an abnormal national distribution.

That is the heart of what needs to be investigated.

And it wouldn’t affect only computer-based candidates.

Honest children who wrote paper-based examinations without cheating could also have been punished by the abnormal performance of people who had access to questions.

The innocent students potentially become the victims of the malpractice they never participated in.

This is why WAEC cannot simply tell Nigerians that these children failed.

Show us the data.

What were the raw scores?

What were the score distributions?

What thresholds produced A1, B2, B3, C4, C5 and C6 in each major subject?

Were those thresholds changed after marking?

Were computer-based and paper-based candidates standardised separately?

How were centres showing statistically abnormal performance treated?

And have results changed after candidates requested reviews?

Because I am also receiving disturbing reports that some people who aggressively challenged questionable results got their cases reconsidered, while millions of ordinary parents may not even know they can request a review.

If that is true, it is unacceptable.

A child whose parents have connections cannot have greater access to justice than a child sitting somewhere in a village.

And there is another dimension that must not be ignored: I am receiving serious allegations of internal management problems within WAEC Nigeria, including concerns about how staff who question certain decisions are treated.

Those allegations also deserve an independent investigation.

This is not an attack on WAEC.

It is a demand for accountability.

The Federal Ministry of Education and National Assembly should urgently invite the leadership of WAEC Nigeria.

Because behind every A1, C6 or F9 is not just a statistic.

There is a child. There is a family. There is a university admission. There is a scholarship. There is a future.

We cannot gamble with the destinies of an entire generation of Nigerian children.
