A massive data centre in Cambridge leaked an undisclosed chemical for days, possibly into local water, and the public still hasn’t been told what the chemical was.

We’re expected to trust that everything is fine while the cleanup happens behind closed doors.

These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity, millions of litres of water for cooling, and now we’re seeing environmental risks that the public isn’t even fully informed about.

If a data centre can leak an unknown chemical into the environment and officials won’t immediately tell people what it is, maybe it’s time to ask whether we should keep approving more of these facilities.

Economic benefits don’t mean much if transparency and environmental protection come second. Canadians deserve better.

Don't get distracted by the headlines about the #Gordiehowebridge . The answers are in the agreements.

Much of the recent discussion surrounding the Gordie Howe International Bridge has focused on one definition in the 2026 Agreement in Principle: "net bridge and crossing related revenues." That is only part of the story.

Legal agreements must be read as a whole.

The 2026 Agreement in Principle contains a critical continuity clause:

"Nothing in this Agreement in Principle shall be interpreted as amending, modifying or superseding the 2012 Canada–Michigan Crossing Agreement or the ownership, governance and financial framework established thereunder."
That provision directs readers back to the 2012 agreement.

Now look at Schedule A of that agreement. Its title is:

"Financial Framework Effective Following the Canadian Contributions Recoupment Date."
It goes one step further. Schedule A, Section 2 (Paramountcy) states that if Schedule A conflicts with any other provision of the Crossing Agreement, Schedule A prevails, and the conflicting provisions are modified or superseded accordingly.

Taken together, these clauses matter.

The 2026 Agreement says it does not supersede the 2012 ownership, governance or financial framework. The 2012 agreement then gives Schedule A paramountcy within that framework, and Schedule A is expressly structured around the Canadian Contributions Recoupment Date.

Does this answer every implementation question? No. The detailed implementation agreements have not yet been released.

But it does show that the legal analysis is more nuanced than many headlines suggest. Reading only the definition of "net bridge and crossing related revenues" without also considering the preserved 2012 framework—and Schedule A's paramountcy clause—provides an incomplete picture.

As always, the operative clauses matter more than the political messaging.
