In the past few days, markets have been whipsawing in response to various AI scenarios, most recently the Citrini thought experiment.
The report sketches a fictional 2028 in which agentic coding tools drive the cost of software production close to the cost of electricity.
In that scenario, corporations sharply reduce or cancel outsourcing contracts, revenues at major Indian IT firms decline, IT exports shrink, India’s balance of payments comes under strain & in its most dramatic passage, even the IMF is imagined to be in preliminary discussions with New Delhi.
It’s a great thought exercise.
But I can’t resist quoting Mark Twain who once said, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”
Let me add another possible scenario to the debate.
I do not claim to have a foolproof counter-scenario. The future remains magically uncertain. Markets are swinging because they are trying to price that uncertainty & in that sense, perhaps they are behaving rationally.
AI will undoubtedly put pressure on IT services companies. Yes, they will need to become more efficient, reduce cost structures, rethink headcount models and move away from pure effort-based pricing toward outcomes & value delivery.
But what if AI does not eliminate service providers & instead makes the best ones even more central?
As AI systems scale across enterprises, someone still has to ensure secure data foundations; integration across legacy and cloud systems; governance, compliance and auditability; mission-critical reliability.
Especially for medium and large enterprises, integration is messy, regulation is heavy, and failure costs are high.
The differentiator may not be who supplies effort but who can deliver outcomes, manage risk and help deliver ‘Scale at Speed’ as we like to say at @tech_mahindra
That role doesn’t disappear. It evolves.
So an alternate scenario, offered with humility and not certainty, is that services firms that pivot decisively toward AI orchestration and outcome-based delivery will remain extremely relevant.
SUNDAY THREAD:
This week the IEA updated their groundbreaking 1.5 degree Net Zero report. I was lucky enough to be a peer reviewer, and I want to explain in my own words what I think it means..
Yes we can still keep to 1.5 degrees! Were you ready to give up? So many people were

'World transitioning to efficient #renewables would cost $62 trillion.'
'But save trillions in #energy costs every year afterwards – meaning the whole transition to pay for itself in less than six years.'

Self-driving cars cause a traffic jam in Austin, Texas.
Shocking footage from Austin showed around 20 Cruise-operated Chevrolet Bolts causing traffic mayhem.
"Are you telling me they have no way to get out of this?" a man shouts in the video.

JP Morgan says Indian bonds to be added to Emerging Markets Bond Index from June 2024.
Implications :
1. Surge in passive inflows ( upto $30 billion) over a staggered manner
2. Even active funds will start looking at Indian govt bonds
3. Positive impact on Rupee
4. Generates more interest in india, reduces pressure on banks n DIIs to absorb all borrowings.
5. Some impact on cost of capital n equities too!
Positioning !
It’s a very important tactic in sports, trading, relationships, geopolitics etc. What India is doing is taking the curtains off its efforts of last few years of rapid geopolitical and economic whirlwind management and showing where we stand now. Gone are the days when West could throw the lollipop of visas and grants, and we would bend over and accommodate every humiliation.
Israel is a great example of this positioning. Not that it doesn’t have its issues. Not that it’s got everything perfect and best. Not that it doesn’t have nations hanging up against it. But anyone with IQ above 1 thinks twice before messing with them. That’s positioning !
It may take many years or even couple of decades before we cross the threshold and be called a developed nation. But doesn’t mean that till that time our security and reputation is out for sale. It’s a singal that while India can be the most hospitable and friendly nation and send nearly hundred million vaccines to world when needed, we also will take a moment to destroy your narratives and egos if you target us.
Technically, this won’t amount to more than war of words and things will be back to normal after couple of weeks. Trudeau can seethe while licking his wounds and focus on his elections and Indian immigrants will breathe a sigh of relief once visas open, but it’ll be clear to the world by then, that India has not only awakened but also realised what a proud and self reliant nation can achieve only if it decided to stand on its own feet.
And yes, we have placed ourselves well and earned and learnt the art of ‘positioning’.
RIP Marcel Boiteux man behind French nuclear fleet and electricity economics powering 70% of French electricity output.
True visionary on providing cheap electricity even before the spike in fossil fuel led energy sources.
#Oppenheimer#nuclear#grid
The greatest man you've never heard of died this week on Wednesday, September 6th.
Marcel Boiteux built the French nuclear fleet as head of national utility EdF, making superb, far-sighted decisions against powerful entrenched interests.
Decisions such as abandoning the poorly-performing French gas reactors for outstanding Westinghouse technology.
And insisting on ruthless standardization that allowed true learning-by-doing, with his teams completing several reactors a year for more than a decade.
His fleet provides 70% of French electricity, and but for the sabotage by his weak, stupid successors inside and outside French government, it should be making half again as much electricity as the 56 reactors do today.
Boiteux's reactor fleet (plus a few more units after his retirement) cost about $150 billion. Compare this to Germany spending about $500 billion on their mess of an "energy transition" which requires them to keep almost all of their coal and gas plants in service.
As a young man Marcel Boiteux refused to accept France's defeat and at age 21 in 1942 as an elite university student he escaped Nazi-occupied France while escorting downed Allied pilots over the Pyrenees mountains to safety in Spain.
Brass. Balls.
This episode revealed the pattern for the rest of his life.
After the war, he studied economics and wrote *the* foundational paper in electricity economics, on how to price electricity service in a way that covered system costs while being fair and sustainable.
He completely understood liberal economics, and knew it did not apply to electricity grids and service. He built cheap power for all, then after his retirement watched as a bunch of pathetic hack economists broke the grid with idiotic "markets" that are failing all over the world.
He rapidly rose in public service after university graduation, and after appointment to the head of Electricité de France, successfully built the most astonishing energy system in the history of the world, proving for all time that a country could truly rely on its own fleet of standardized nuclear reactors producing low-cost emissions-free energy.
Anti-nuclear terrorists exploded a bomb outside the door of his family home in 1977 but he kept building.
It must have been torture for this truly great man to watch twenty years of silly, unserious leaders damage and begin to destroy his beloved EDF and its fleet of reactors, leading France straight into its worst energy crisis since the oil crisis of 1973 that triggered Boiteux's nuclear fleet construction in the first place.
But he didn't come up with the idea of a nuclear fleet powering a total electrification of the economy because an oil crisis hit. He was too prophetic to be a mere reactionary. Rather, he declared the slogan "All nuclear, all electric" months before the OPEC embargo hit in 1973.
Marcel Boiteux died this week at the age of 101.
World's fastest growing economy is part of a strategic coalition of BRICS & SCO and is relentlessly courted by the West and G7/G20. Bharat is the bridge of a divided world!
Do you remember the India of a decade ago? There were corruption scandals and andolans in every city. Remember how journalists where collaborating with lobbyists to sell ministries? Remember how every month there would be a terror bomb exploding in some city of India? Remember how the govt, instead of fighting terrorism, had itself created "Hindu Terrorism" angle out of thin air as a counter to Jihadis? Remember how Muslim vote was used as a veto to describe politics of "secularism"? Remember how Ram Mandir was considered as a "dirty word" that no one would ever utter because their secular credentials would be lost forever?
It is indeed a miracle what we have achieved in one decade! From a collapsing nation to the most important civilization that would decide the trajectory of mankind in the coming decade!!
This is why we must all thrive for a Modi third term, this is our only path for a tryst with our destiny!!!
The India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor is game changer which is an alternative vision to Chinese belt and road initiative.
A more sustainable global infrastructure push without the caveats of Chinese debt trap.

Great article on how India has transitioned from Incredible India to Inevitable India as the next economic superpower.
