The 366-metre stretch at Chingrighata on the Orange Line of Kolkata Metro remains stalled due to a nearly 3-year delay by KMC in design approval and continued withholding of traffic diversion permissions by the state government. These bottlenecks had jeopardized RVNL’s June 2025 target and delayed critical metro connectivity for East and South Kolkata.
After many rounds of meetings between Kolkata Police, Kolkata Traffic Police, KMDA, KMC and Metro officials, no conclusion was reached on providing traffic block for two consecutive weekends at Chingrighata which was needed by RVNL to complete the last remaining stretch. RVNL had also built a traffic diversion road to facilitate the block.
After months of inconclusive deliberations coming to the fore, a BJP Karyakarta filed a PIL in the Kolkata High Court as a matter of immense public interest was being derailed due to petty politics by state government. Finally the courts mandated the state government and metro authorities to find a quick resolution which was achieved in a meeting between them. The state government had clearly stated that it will provide with traffic block at Chingrighata for the metro work to ensure for two consecutive weekend nights in November after the festive season is over.
However in November, Kolkata Police took no such steps and cited the Eden Gardens international test match for not providing the block and then proceeded to give no reason for the second consecutive weekend for not providing with the same.
The matter has yet again reached the courts through the same PIL and the High Court is about to hear the plea next week. Question is if key bridges like that of Vidyasagar Setu can be closed off on weekends, why is the state government hell bent on not following the direction of the court and simultaneously damaging the prospects of a metro line?
Orange line would connect the IT Sector of the city with that of east and south Kolkata. People will immensely benefit from the same. But the state government wants to derail it all cost before the election, lest people of Kolkata get to ease out their lives!
