There’s a popular lie that says we can look at someone’s life or our own and determine how we stand with God.

The thinking goes like this: if life is going great, if we’re rich and healthy, then we must be right with God. But if we’re poor, sick, or suffering, then we must not be right with him.

This twisted way of thinking goes all the way back to the book of Job. Job’s three friends assumed he had committed some horrendous sin, and that’s why terrible things were happening to him.

The same idea shows up in John 9, which we read today in Bible in One Year. When Jesus’s disciples see a man born blind, they ask, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (9:2). Jesus corrects their faulty theology, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him" (9:3).

We too can fall into the trap of believing there is a direct link between how good we are with God and how good our lives are going. But it does not work that way at all. There is one thing, and one thing alone, that determines how we stand with God: Jesus Christ and our faith in his redemptive work.

If we trust in the saving work of Christ, we are right with God. Good things will happen in our lives, and bad things will happen too. None of that is the barometer of our standing with God.

The only measure is Christ, his work on our behalf, and our faith in that work, which makes us right with God and keeps us right with him no matter what.
