BOWIE MUG SHOT TAKEN FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY
โA gentle face youโve seen before ...โ
Fifty years ago today, this mug shot was taken by the Rochester Police Department when Bowie appeared at the City Court for arraignment.
The picture was taken four days after David was arrested on 21st March 1976, along with singer James Osterberg (Iggy Pop), bodyguard Dwayne Vaughn and Chi Wah Soo of Rochester on marijuana possession charges.
All four were charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Police said they confiscated what they described as about half a pound of marijuana. The charge was a Class C felony, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
It was a scary time for Bowie fans, particularly outside of the US where follow up stories in the press were scarce and easily missed.
In the event, David pleaded innocent and was eventually found not guilty by the Rochester City Court.
The 5" x 4" photograph was rescued by Gary Hess from the trash during an estate sale of a retired Rochester police officer. It was later auctioned on eBay and fetched $2,556. The photograph was bought by a BowieNetter, who kindly loaned it the V&A David Bowie is exhibition in 2013. (Weโve not identified her for reasons of privacy.)
Aside from what has become one of the most iconic mug shots of all time (along with others of Presley, Sinatra, Jagger, Vicious and many more) the other images here are from Davidโs arrival at court. You may notice Coco and Iggy bringing up the rear. The news clipping is from The Guardian when the photo came up for sale.
The final image is from news archive footage of a brief press interview with David broadcast by NBC, wherein reporters question him about his treatment by police. Itโs priceless and you can watch it here: https://t.co/ly4RrmqAkW

LOOKING BACK FIFTY YEARS TO BOWIEโS 28TH BIRTHDAY
โSlim tie, Showdown, Can't stopโฆโ *
Itโs 8th January in David Bowieโs UK birthplace and itโs wonderful to see all the appreciation already shown for him around the globe on what would have been his 78th birthday today.
The love for DB via social posts, live tributes and fan meetings is quite incredible. You know how moved he would have been.
The image weโve used was taken on Davidโs 28th birthday on this day in 1975. He was snapped by Robin Platzer at the star-studded opening of the Lajeski Gallery in New York, where sixty artists exhibited their interpretation of โThe Condition of the Tie today'.
Hereโs an edited excerpt from a report in The New York Times headed: The Theme Was Ties, the Opening Slightly Mad...

The showโs theme was โThe Condition of the Tie Today,โ and its purpose was, as Yoko Ono, artist and former Beatle wife, put it, โfun in this time of depression.โ
So for fun's sake, if not always for art's sake, about 1,000 guests and gateโcrashers from the worlds of art, fashion, music and theater and from the fringes of these worlds, jammed into 22โyearold Gary Lajeski's new chrome and glass winter digs in the old Valentino building. It's an extension of his Tower Gallery in Southampton.
They came with and without tie and in a variety of dress and undress.
Pop singers, ranging from glitter (David Bowie) to bubble gum (David Cassidy), mingled with actors and socialites who were trundled back and forth from the Plaza Hotel by carriage.

* Actually, Bowieโs tie was far from slim, having been a fan of neckwear as a statement for some time already.

DAVID LIVE AT #2 IN THE UK 50 YEARS AGO TODAY
โAnd he was alright, the band was altogether...โ
According to the flyer reproduced here, David Live was released in the UK on 29th October, 1974. October 29 was a Tuesday back in 1974, a highly unusual day to release an LP in the 70s as the great majority were issued on a Friday. Given the other information available, we can deduce that the likely release date would normally have been Friday 1st November.
Whatever the truth, the release date didn't hinder its success as David Live entered the official UK album chart at #2 on 16th November, 1974, and remained in the Top 20 for another six weeks till the end of the year.
David Live was Bowieโs first officially released live album, and it was compiled from performances during a run of shows in July 1974, at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia during The Year Of The Diamond Dogs Tour. Itโs a magnificent recording capturing the energy and excitement of a completely new band that had started the tour a month earlier in Canada.
Incredible to think that Bowie had only arrived in New York three months earlier, but within two months had learnt and rehearsed a whole new set and embarked upon his most ambitious stage show to date.
The album really does stand the test of the past fifty years and sounds as exciting now as it did when it was released in 1974.

SPACE ODDITY 45 RELEASED 55 YEARS AGO TODAY
โAnd the stars look very different today...โ
To mark the 55th anniversary of the release of the Space Oddity single, we thought that this post would bear repeating.
Five years ago, In celebration of both Space Oddityโs 50th anniversary and the release of the @Tonuspomus 2019 Mix of both the Space Oddity album and single, @NachosVideos gave us another exclusive.
Nacho synced the new full-length mix to the original Hits A GoGo broadcast live from Zurich on 3rd November, 1969.
The show had a haunted house theme for the recent Halloween celebrations, which explains the moody lighting and dry ice.
