โค๏ธ this thread. We should account for what causes "cogntive gravitational pull" (for lack of a better term) in ourselves and others. Folks who say "schedule the thing" are pulled by calendars and timeboxes. But that's not a universal human trait!
What do you do if you identify an IBNU?
Schedule it, as Stephen Covey suggests.
But if you have ADHD, thatโs likely NOT going to be enough.
Our brains are probably going to pull us back toward what feels urgent, regardless of whatโs scheduled.

Some folks remember my "life of the party" time when I was in tabletop games, which was definitely a coping mechanism. This list of adaptive behaviors hits home from the first example.
Example 1:ย "ADHD people are the life of the party!"ย This is a coping mechanism.ย A lot of ADHDers learn to embrace their impulsivity and hyperactivity to distract people from their struggles.ย

Just gave a speedrun talk at @writethedocs Portland on Stop saying "Just be logical". The slides & script: https://t.co/NCKyosxWfg
(Will post the video whenever it's online)
When I gave talks about "hostile design" at my last job, which included hidden support escalation paths and neuroaccessibility issues that rarely were considered. So ethical developer for me means advocating against hostile design went we see it start to happen.
Friends in the Twitterverse, I'm curious:
What does "ethical web design/development" mean to you? How do you define it? What exactly makes it ethical to you?
I do, notably in my shoulders and elbows but generally in most joints. Have had a bunch of physio to "learn" how to move like humans are suppose to, to keep from injuring myself.
@scribblingfox I'm not sure, but when I find out, I'll probably not let you know cuz that would involve communicating with humans. Unless somehow I decide to keep that as a hobby.
Refrain from any ADHD Coach out there whoโs telling you some bullshit like โyou need to be consistent to be successfulโ.
Nothing tells me more that they are clueless as far as what it takes for someone with an ADHD brain to succeed and just how different we are.
Yup, I'm part of the Google layoffs. Mentioned elsewhere, figured I would here as well. Gonna take the energy I was using stubbornly advocating for my users into making free empathy advocacy material online.
But also hey, if you want a UX content strategist, hit me up! ๐
@scribblingfox Right?! I have to remind myself that if I'm feeling sleepy at some point in the day and want to take a nap, I get more benefit out of 20 minutes outside in the sun than in a 45+ minute nap.
And by "remind myself" I mean I only tend to remember -after- the nap...
@rdonoghue Your tweet reminds me that I should have a saltwater solution around to aid de-icing. Apparently adding dish soap may help, but I've yet to experiment.
society: "Why didn't you just ask for accommodations?"
(1) receiving accommodations are never as simple as "just ask"
(2) I didn't realize/know I was disabled until my mid-30's
(3) I don't feel safe enough to disclose
(4) I struggle to believe I'm "worthy" of any help/support
WTD East Coast Quorum will take a fascinating dive into "empathy advocacy" in documentation with @adocgeek (Google UX Content Strategist): https://t.co/wCiGhCxxTm
TMW you walk into a branding meeting expecting to be a minor player, and turn into the person running the entire effort. Being a tech writer/content strategist certainly opens some really interesting doors I never expect to see.
