Let's talk about what Ateneo is comfortable being loud about.
They were vocal against Duterte's drug war. Their faculty and administration signed statements, held forums, gave interviews.
They positioned themselves as the moral conscience of the nation.
Now two of their own student-athletes are dead and Rene Baterbonia's mother flown to Manila from Agusan del Sur asking why nobody told her what kind of training her 19-year-old son was being put through.
Where is that same moral energy now? Where are the press conferences? Where is the institutional accountability they so readily demand from everyone else?
Moral outrage, apparently, is a luxury reserved for politics. Not for the boys they recruited from the provinces to win championships.
Alam ko many Manila friends are sick of Manila vs Bisaya narrative pero that's the truth! And if we fail to acknowledge, much less understand the problem, then talo pa rin tayo sa 2028 lol.
As someone from Mindanao, I can tell you, environment and upbringing shape political choices here more than anything.
My whole family? DDS.
My officemates and friends? DDS. During the last election, most of them supported BBM not because of him, but because of Duterte. Tapos ngayon, they hate BBM na, still because of Duterte.
Kaya nung marinig at mabasa ko mga linyahan ni Shuvee, knowing she's Bisaya, hindi na ako nagulat. I hear those exact same words from my siblings, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. That's how deep the loyalty to Duterte runs here, parang collective mindset. And trust me, it's not easy to break. π Kung openly anti-Duterte ka, makukuyog ka talaga.
That's why if there's even a sliver of chance that someone like Shuvee could start questioning and slowly shifting, we have to take it. Maybe at first magpanggap lang siya para hindi ma-bash. But sometimes that's how real change begins. Fake it till you make it. Before you know it, what started as pakisama or performative lang can grow into genuine conviction.
At the end of the day, that's our goal naman di ba? To open eyes, to spark change, and to break the cycle. We can't achieve that if we shut the door on people who've been trapped in the DDS bubble all their lives. Every person who changes their perspective is one more step closer to the change we've been fighting for.
So wag natin sayangin. If there's a window, kahit maliit, let's grab it. Push it open. Because change doesn't happen overnight, but it does start somewhere.
