@aabewhite Will compiling instead of transpiling become the recommended path going forward? I personally like the feeling of knowing I’m using the first class citizen of each platform, but there’s probably a lot being unlocked by this method.
@rsms@bernaferrari@mrncst Could you please share your keybindings? I’m also switching to split + Colemak DH, and so far the alphanumerics make sense, but the symbols and command keys don’t feel as intuitive.
@JLarky@Th3_Antonio @OrenElbaum @Rich_Harris Bit unfair to criticize a pre-1.0 framework for having breaking changes isn’t it.
They did mention they’ll work on codemods for this recent change, despite it not being on them that people use their beta software on production.
One of my biggest pieces of advice was to build something. You need to build to properly learn. Combine a passion with code, and let code enhance it. Also, have someone to bounce shit off of. I recently learned SwiftUI like that, grateful for folks who made themselves available.
@rikarends@Ranmacar I see, thank you for the explanation. I’m hopeful that something will be added to browsers in the future as they become more and more like containerized OSes, that will be enough of a paradigm shift to remove those limitations. 🤞
@rikarends@Ranmacar Ah, I see. Makes sense, thank you for your insights. Do you think a browser like Firefox could ever have the tools to compile Rust?
Reading about WebContainers (https://t.co/5Fj1AC51t4) made me wonder, but running Node inside V8 is less impressive than compiling Rust would be.
@rikarends@Ranmacar Having it be able to run in the browser would be a dream for people like me that would love to be able to use an iPad for dev while on the go (also keeping an eye on Stackblitz for this), but supporting mobile Safari as a compile target might be more trouble than it is worth.
@chrisbiscardi@rustlang Great video! I think another selling point of Rust for front-end devs is that 3D on the web is exploding in popularity, and projects like @makepad show that Rust will become a good option to deliver lightweight and performant 3D experiences on the web.
@michaelvillar@height_app Very excited to hear that! The lack of an iOS app has been the only thing stopping me from also using Height for general to-do’s that I currently store in Todoist or Notion.
@chrisbiscardi Hahah oh, believe me, if I ever write anything of note in Rust, I’ll make sure they know. “Am I developer now?”
At least their snobbery, and our desire to prove them wrong, can serve as our motivation.
@chrisbiscardi My biggest hurdle so far has been not having much use for it in my day to day, so I don’t practice enough and forget it all. I’ve read the first 100 pages of The Book 3 times now…
I feel like my breakthrough will be becoming confident enough to start writing my APIs in Rust.
@chrisbiscardi It feels really weird to say but one of the things I liked most about learning Rust is that I felt a bit more validated as a developer, especially since JS has so much negative stigma about it, especially coming from devs that work in lower level languages.
