As the journalist who reported on this case and paid a high price for it, I’ll tell you that Karmelo did not just k*ll an unarmed white kid.

The family started a GiveSendGo, raising over half a million dollars. They did not even pay for bail; a friend of the advocates did. Their advocate threatened the school that he would hold public protests if they did not give Karmelo his diploma, and the school buckled. Karmelo was able to be at home on house arrest and is able to go to the barber and the library. He has been able to spend the holidays with his family, while the family he destroyed has spent the holidays mourning their son. The victim's parents have both been threatened, doxxed, and swatted.

Both the Anthonys and their advocates have lied and targeted me and my family. I have been doxxed. My husband has been doxxed. I have been swatted. I have been targeted with CPS. My children’s lives have been threatened to the point that one Anthony supporter said that he was going to sl*t my child’s throat.

A man who had to be investigated by the FBI and CID is currently sitting in my county jail because he was counting down the days until I gave birth to my child so that he could “end me.” This man was a social media friend of the advocate for the Anthony family.

All because I dared to thoroughly report on a black 17-year-old who stabbed a white 17-year-old at a track meet.

No one knows this case better than me. And I know just how dark and evil these people truly are.

In 1980, a Michigan political scientist named Robert Axelrod ran a tournament. He invited mathematicians and economists to submit strategies for a game where you repeatedly choose to cooperate with someone or screw them over. Fourteen entries, some hundreds of lines of code. The one that won was four lines: cooperate on the first move, then copy whatever the other person just did.

He ran it again with 62 entries, everyone knowing it had already won. Nobody could beat it.

The traits that made it win: never defect first, punish defection, forgive fast, stay predictable. "Slowed down, let her in" is line one of that program.

Here is the part Matthew got right without knowing the math. The reason cooperating first wins, and doesn't just feel nice, comes down to what theorists call the shadow of the future. Be generous to a stranger you'll never see again and you eat the cost for nothing. Be generous to someone you'll keep running into and the move pays itself back across every interaction left to come.

He thought he was playing a one-shot game with an anonymous driver on a highway. He was playing a repeated game with a neighbor. Same road every day, same faces, decades in front of both of them.

He admitted it and the Jury found him Guilty

His sentence?

35 years with the possibility of parole.

He confessed.
The jury convicted him.
And he could be out on parole in less than 18 years, still a young man with his whole life ahead of him.

Austin Metcalf doesn't get 18 more years.

He doesn't get ANY.

The prosecutor said it best: mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent.

On this day in 1915, the sitting U.S. Secretary of State resigned in protest because he thought the President was pushing America toward war.

His name was William Jennings Bryan. Three-time Democratic presidential nominee. One of the most famous men in America. And he walked away from the most powerful cabinet position in government because he believed Woodrow Wilson was lying to the public.

The Lusitania had been sunk by a German U-boat a month earlier. 1,201 people dead, including 128 Americans. Wilson sent Germany a sharp diplomatic note demanding accountability. Bryan signed the first note reluctantly. But when Wilson drafted a second one, even harder in tone, Bryan refused.

His argument was rational: Britain was also violating American neutrality, blockading German ports and stopping U.S. ships. Wilson was protesting Germany loudly and ignoring Britain entirely. Bryan called it exactly what it was: favoritism that would drag America into the war on Britain's side.

He resigned rather than sign the note. He said he would not be complicit in what he believed was a deliberate march to war dressed up as neutral diplomacy.

He was right. America entered WWI two years later. 116,000 Americans died.

History mostly forgot Bryan and celebrated Wilson. But Bryan saw it coming, said so publicly, and paid for it with his career. Sometimes the people who resign in protest are the ones who had it figured out.
