Salamat kaps! There is something profoundly beautiful about seeing an artist who no longer needs to busk choose to do it anyway.

Pablo stood there in his normcore fits with a body bag slung over his shoulder, accompanied by a skeleton crew of a band and a simple printed sheet with his social media handles in front of them. He took the time to introduce every member of the band by name, not once, but twice, making sure the people creating the music with him were seen too.

Except this wasn’t an unknown artist hoping to be discovered.

Not even 3 months ago, his group, SB19 performed in front of an estimated 100k people. He has a concert in one week that is already sold out. They also have a Grammy Global Spin event in a little over 2 weeks and an hour long set at Lollapalooza as the first Filipino act to perform at the festival.

Yet here he was again, playing for whoever happened to stop and listen.

He could have relied on algorithms or media tours, instead he chose one of the oldest and most vulnerable ways of sharing music: standing in a public space and letting the songs speak first.

To me, that little printed sheet is the most touching part. It doesn’t say, “You already know who I am.” It quietly says, “If you liked what you heard, here’s where you can find more.” Eto po sa papel.

It also reminds me of something I’ve come to admire about SB19. They never seem to treat busking as something they’ve outgrown. Whether it’s Taipei, Singapore, LA or now BGC, they keep returning to it, not because they need to, but because they genuinely enjoy sharing music with people where they are.

In the music industry, success often means becoming more distant, yet Pablo and SB19 keeps finding ways to become more accessible.

May they never lose that. 🥹
