in Imperial San Francisco, Brechin talks about how mining was mostly just an excuse for accumulation of capital. gold needed to be mined with iron tools, and to mine that iron it had to be financed with gold. a cycle of metal begetting metal never justifying its own existence

Now I’m even more annoyed that the Caltrans interchange project spent tons of money on pavement & palm trees for the racetrack entrance road instead of extending the Gilman cycletrack. What a waste.
