Any neutral observer of today’s diplomatic catastrophe in the Oval Office would first note that Zelensky was at a disadvantage in that he was not speaking in his mother tongue. He patiently tried to explain to Trump the limits of diplomacy thus far with Putin. Trump, then, like an aged and indulged owner of a family business, lectured him on his own genius. Finally, VP Vance baited Zelensky, lecturing him on his own country without ever having visited it. And the icing on the cake was that Vance demanded that Zelensky kiss the ring—basically saying, you haven’t said thank you! Under these circumstances, Zelensky’s self control was amazing.
