When I newly got married, my mother-in-law came to stay with us for a while.

There was one thing she always did.

Whenever food was served, she would ask, “Nwam eriela nri”
Meaning “Has my son eaten?”

At first, I didn’t think much of it. After all, that’s her child.

But one particular day, I had gone to the market, come back tired, entered the kitchen straight away, cooked, and served everyone.

By the time I finished dishing her food, I was exhausted.

She called me and asked the usual question:

“Has my son eaten?”

That day, I wasn’t in the mood to keep quiet.

I looked at her and said,

“Have you asked me if I have eaten?”

“You saw me leave for the market. You saw me come back and start cooking immediately. You have not asked if I have rested, if I have eaten, or if I’m okay. The only question is whether your son has eaten.”

I told her, “I know he’s your child, but am I not also your child now too?”

Immediately, she apologized.

She said, “No, no, don’t say that. You’re my last born now. You’re my baby girl.”

I told her, “I don’t feel like a baby girl right now.”

We talked about it, and that was the end of it.
