I never indulged in the immense Fauci hatred like many conservatives. I never saw him as "evil" for the lockdowns, the school closings or his staunch, almost unbending advocacy of the vax. Rather, he always came across exceedingly vain, egotistical and controlling. He said he knew what he clearly didn't (how can you really prove covid came from eating a bat in a wet mart, and why ignore that the initial outbreak took place where they were experimenting with it?). I also thought it was weird he stayed in government so long when he could have made money in private practice, unless of course, he lusted for the limelight. These are all the worst characteristics of an unelected bureaucrat with power.

Earlier I posted about Manny Fernandez for 75 days until NFL Opening Day, but this one means more to me than stats.

When my dad was 9, he was hit by a car while riding his bike. Doctors thought he may never walk again. Luckily, he did! Manny came to the hospital, brought him a signed football, and spent time with him.
That moment built a lifelong bond with my dad’s family.

Manny and my grandfather became close friends, so close that my grandfather was the best man at Manny’s wedding.

One of my favorite stories: after the dolphins wild card game of the undefeated season on christmas eve 1972, Manny and his wife drove to my great-grandmother Nana Pauline’s house in Miramar, sat on the couch with my dad, ate my Nana’s rigatoni dinner, watched the rest of the NFL games, and fell asleep on the floor next to the TV. He exhausted himself by playing a football game at 1pm, eating an Italian dinner and spending most of the evening watching football while doing push-ups in my families living room with the dumbbells his wife had just given him at the house as an early Christmas gift.

I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him, but I grew up loving the Dolphins through stories like these.

At 100 years old, WWII veteran Bernie Smoot still drives his convertible Ford Mustang to play golf five days a week, shoots in the low 80s and shares wisdom from 74 years in the game: “You live to play golf. But to reach my age, you play golf to live.”

To celebrate Bernie — who landed at Omaha Beach just months after graduating high school — his PGA Coach and friend Jeff Maynor organized a tournament in his honor at the University of Maryland Golf Course, where Bernie plays five days a week.

Maynor, the course’s PGA Director of Golf, has run a @PGAHOPE program there for Veterans since 2019, which Bernie loves to support. The tournament for Bernie was a chance for those Veterans to thank him and celebrate his love for the game.
