One application of AI that I am excited about is AI-assisted formal verification of code and bug finding.

Right now ethereum's biggest technical risk probably is bugs in code, and anything that could significantly change the game on that would be amazing.

Over the next week or more, we’ll have a look at a compilation of all the most common smart contract exploits.

Let’s start with the first exploit;

Reentrancy 🔄

A smart contract reentrancy exploit is a type of vulnerability in which an attacker leverages the reentrancy feature of Solidity, the programming language for Ethereum smart contracts, to manipulate the contract's state and potentially steal funds or disrupt its intended functionality.

Here's how a reentrancy exploit typically works:

1. Vulnerability in the Contract ⚠️

The smart contract contains a function that interacts with external contracts, typically involving state changes (such as transferring funds), but does not properly manage the order of operations or state changes.

2. External Call from Within the Contract ⚠️

The contract makes an external call to another contract, allowing it to execute code in the context of the calling contract. If the called contract invokes a function in the calling contract before the initial function completes, it creates a reentrancy vulnerability.

3. Recursive Calls ⚠️

The attacker exploits this vulnerability by repeatedly invoking the function in the target contract before the initial invocation completes. This allows the attacker to manipulate the contract's state during each call, potentially leading to unauthorized fund transfers or other unexpected behavior.

4. Exploitation ⚠️

The attacker triggers the vulnerable function with a call that contains code to exploit the reentrancy vulnerability. This could involve transferring funds to an external address controlled by the attacker while the contract's state is still being manipulated.

5. Unauthorized Access or Theft ⚠️

Through the repeated invocation of the vulnerable function, the attacker may be able to drain funds from the contract or disrupt its intended functionality.
