이걸 자꾸 “100년 전 조상의 잘못을 왜 후손에게 묻느냐, 연좌제냐”고 하는데,
그 이야기를 하는 게 아니다.

조상 때문에 후손이 죄인이 되어야 한다고 생각하지 않는다.
조상은 내가 선택한 사람이 아니니까.

그런데 본인이 먼저 그 조상을 꺼내 자랑했다.
그것도 한두 번이 아니라 여러 언론 인터뷰에서 집안의 자랑스러운 역사로 이야기해왔다.

“우리 증조부는 최초의 양의사였다.”
“고종을 진료했다.”
"4대째. 의사집안이다."

그러니 사람들이 궁금해서 찾아본 것이다.
그 사람이 누구였고, 그 시대에 어떻게 살았는지를.

여기서부터는 이야기가 달라진다.

일제강점기는 그냥 오래된 옛날이야기가 아니다.
나라를 빼앗기고, 재산과 삶의 터전을 잃고, 독립운동을 하다 감옥에 가고 죽은 사람들이 실제로 존재했던 시대다.
그 후손들에게는 아직도 가족의 역사다.

그런데 식민지 시대를 살았던 조상의 화려한 이력은 계속 꺼내 자랑하면서, 그 사람이 식민지배 과정에서 저지른 잘못이 드러나자

“100년 전 조상 일인데 후손이 무슨 죄냐”

라고 해버리면 이상하지 않은가.

반대로 생각해보면 쉽다.

독립운동가의 후손 앞에서 친일 행적으로 부와 지위를 얻은 조상을 계속 자랑한다면 그 사람은 어떤 마음이겠는가.

조상의 죄를 물려받으라는 것이 아니라,
조상의 영광을 가져다 자랑했다면 그 역사의 어두운 부분까지 최소한 알고 대하는 태도가 필요하다는 이야기다.

정말 몰랐다면 알게 된 뒤의 태도가 중요하다.

과거는 내가 선택할 수 없다.
그러나 그 과거를 어떻게 기억하고 이야기할지는 지금을 사는 내가 선택할 수 있다.

영광만 상속받고 부끄러움은 “100년 전 일”이라며 버릴 수는 없다.
