Every few years, Ateneo produces a think piece about inequality in the Philippines. About the gap between the elite and the masa. About how institutions must serve the marginalized.

Rene Baterbonia was from Agusan del Sur. He was recruited because he was 6'4", won the Palaro MVP, and could help Ateneo win a UAAP title. He was the masa. He was the kind of kid those think pieces are supposedly written for.

He is now dead after drowning during an Ateneo-organized activity.

And the institution's response has been to ask for "privacy and space."

The gap between what Ateneo preaches and what Ateneo practices has never been more visible. Or more damning.

i’d been talking with the staff about when would be a good time to greet everyone through a live and we were waiting for the right timing. when i saw the article come out today, i felt like today’s the right moment so i decided to come and greet you all like this.

while thinking of them, i thought it would be nice if we have a name that will give us team-like feeling and kept wondering ‘what should it be?’ and after thinking it over, something came to my mind. i wanted to include the word ‘soul’. the word itself has meanings like sharing emotions, connecting deeply and feeling each other’s soul. with that in mind, i changed the S in ‘soul’ to X so that it has something in common with my name, and that's how we came up with the name XngHan&Xoul.”
