#TheEarlySpring director Jiang Jizheng talked about his approach to the drama’s female target audience and why #JingBoran and #SunQian fit Luan Nian & Shang Zhitao naturally
Since the majority of the audience is women, he said they deliberately approached the characters from a female perspective. For intimate scenes, he would ask the women on set, including Sun Qian, whether certain touches, movements or kisses felt natural or too greasy, because men and women can perceive physical intimacy very differently.
For him, intimacy isn’t about simply adding kisses. “If you deliberately kiss just for the sake of having a kiss, the characters’ emotional state can get lost.”
“When a man and a woman look into each other’s eyes, I think what the audience really wants to see is the emotional push and pull happening inside them before that moment, before they actually take that step.”
He believes the audience wants to feel the emotional push and pull before the kiss, the hesitation, distance, tension and anticipation. So he first establishes their physical distance: sometimes they move closer, sometimes one steps back while the other moves closer, then he adds their eye contact and reactions. Lighting, atmosphere, editing and even moments of silence help deepen what the characters are feeling without spelling everything out. If handled poorly, intimacy can easily feel “greasy” and uncomfortable to watch, particularly to female viewers. His goal is to let the audience feel what’s happening between them rather than simply watch them kiss.
The first time he met Jing Boran bcs it's their first collaboration. From the way Jing spoke to him and the way Jing looked at him, he could really feel that Jingbao was a mature person and also had what our Luan Nian character has inside him. He’d describe it as restraint and has this kind of mature man charm.
As for Sun Qian, actually, she is from Harbin, so naturally have a certain vitality. And this vitality is very important to the character Shang Zhitao, and it’s also a very fitting and key quality. And she can also be very cutesy, but at the same time and has a lot of ideals.
So, after Jiang saw the two of them, he actually didn’t need to deliberately impose strict requirements on how they should be. The things they naturally give off, or even the feeling that comes through when you put them in front of the camera, are actually very, very fitting for these two characters. His job was simply to use atmosphere, distance and dramatic tension to bring it out.
And apparently Sun Qian is also the one keeping the set alive. She didn’t just tease Jing Boran, she teased the director too, and always caught him off guard.

Tiga drama yang ga disangka-sangka bakalan SUKSES BERAT! Dari awal casting banyak aktor yang nolak gabung di project-project ini:
1. The Early Spring
2. Lovely Runner
3. Reply 1997
Reply 1997 paling legend sih.
*cmiiw*
