That’s the problem with “clear and obvious.”

They’ve turned it into a get-out clause. If the ref misses it, VAR can just sit there and say “not clear enough” even when the pictures show a defender taking the man. We’ve seen softer ones given this season. We’ve seen them given against smaller clubs. Suddenly at 0-0 going into the last half-hour against Arsenal it’s “minimal contact.”

Clear and obvious is supposed to catch the ones the ref gets badly wrong. This is one of them. You don’t need 15 angles. One look tells you White doesn’t play the ball.

They had time to check the Arsenal one and correctly move it outside the box. Fine. Do your job both ways. Don’t hide behind the threshold when a home side is shouting for a penalty that most people in the ground can see.

Villa aren’t asking for a soft one. They’re asking for the same standard everyone else gets. Tonight they didn’t get it.
