🚨BREAKING: Two photons collided and an electron was born from nothing but light.

Einstein spent his final decades trying to unify the forces governing matter and energy. He never got there. But he left behind E=mc² as the clearest statement physics has ever produced: mass and energy are the same substance wearing different clothes. Every nuclear explosion, every star burning hydrogen into helium, confirms one direction of that equation where matter converts into energy. What just happened ran it in reverse. Pure energy, in the form of colliding photons, crystallized into physical matter.

The Breit Wheeler process was predicted in 1934. Two physicists sat down with Dirac’s quantum equations and concluded that colliding two photons at sufficient energy would produce an electron and a positron from pure light. No atoms. No nucleus. No raw material except electromagnetic radiation. The physics community accepted the math and then spent 90 years assuming it was experimentally unreachable.

Photons do not naturally want to interact. Light passes through light without acknowledgment. Getting two photons to collide with sufficient energy required conditions that exist naturally only inside stars and during the first seconds after the Big Bang. Recreating that in a laboratory meant generating X-ray fields of extraordinary intensity and designing collision geometries that no instrument previously existed to control.

At the right energy threshold, a particle and its antimatter twin appeared from electromagnetic nothingness.

Every electron orbiting every nucleus in the observable universe traces its origin back to an energy state dense enough to crystallize into mass. The universe did not begin with matter. It began with energy so concentrated it had no choice but to become something solid. Physicists just reproduced that moment on a table.

The line between energy and matter was never a wall.

Went down the rabbit hole on this. One equation from 1926 explains why your lungs and that tree look identical.

A physiologist figured out that any system pushing fluid through branching tubes will naturally evolve toward the same shape. His rule is simple: when a tube splits into two smaller tubes, their sizes follow a precise ratio that wastes the least energy. Blood vessels follow it. Lung airways follow it. The water pipes inside trees follow it too.

Your lungs branch 23 times between your windpipe and the tiny air sacs where oxygen enters your blood. Each split shrinks the tubes by the same ratio. After 23 rounds, a single 2cm-wide tube becomes 480 million air sacs with a combined surface area bigger than a studio apartment, all packed inside your chest. Trees do the same thing in reverse, branching outward to catch as much sunlight and CO2 as possible.

Leonardo da Vinci noticed this 500 years before Murray. He wrote that all the branches of a tree at any height, when combined, are equal in thickness to the trunk below them. He used it to draw realistic trees. It took five more centuries for biologists to realize the same geometry applies inside your body.

But the tweet oversimplifies the gas exchange part. Trees are not our primary oxygen source. NOAA estimates tiny ocean organisms called phytoplankton produce roughly half of Earth’s oxygen. One single species, Prochlorococcus (so small that 20,000 fit in a drop of seawater), produces about 20% of all the oxygen in our atmosphere. That’s more than every tropical rainforest combined. The Amazon’s net oxygen output is actually close to zero because the animals and microbes in the rainforest consume almost as much as the trees make.

The real story behind that image: physics solved the same engineering problem billions of years apart, in completely unrelated organisms, and landed on the exact same answer.

Tillman was assassinated. It has been suggested that he was communicating with a reporter about what he was seeing. That would have been monitored by CIA and military intelligence. If his team mates were told he was a traitor (a lie but branding is important) it is possible they assassinated him. BUT, keep in mind most SF units have sheep dipped CIA assets in them and vice versus. This has been true back to the 40’s. Either way, the US government put a hit out on a US soldier. Understanding the cultural impact of a star athlete returning home with inside truth about how fucked up the US military operation was couldn’t be allowed to happen.
