@greysiegrey@TracyAgnello it looks like Edith Grossman’s translation is best for modern readers so that one might be more enjoyable—or maybe the story is one everyone said is a classic but isn’t really that good
@greysiegrey@TracyAgnello with books like these, it’s so important to find a good translation. I learned the hard way that a bad translations really affect how you can appreciate a text (looking at you, Anna Karenina 😭) so it makes me wonder what kinds of translations we used to give to kids
@greysiegrey@TracyAgnello I just honestly cannot stomach another book about war. Oh, war is bad and leads to long-term trauma? Groundbreaking. Had no idea. Maybe men should stop starting them, then
@TracyAgnello@greysiegrey Giving people book rec’s is one of my remaining sources of joy so I’m always happy to help!! And if you read any of them I’d love to talk about them with you
@greysiegrey@TracyAgnello of course! Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is SO good and ahead of its time. Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen. Beloved or Sula by Toni Morrison. Kindred by Octavia Butler. Classics but still accessible and (most importantly) aren’t about white men and war
@vast_differ3nce How strong is your union? This feels not necessarily grievable but you could get it in writing that you’re upset by it. Also who cares about a teacher’s desk if you’re getting your job done??
